Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Does a new plan for the area already exist or is the old planning document and map posted up here earlier with African species being able to transfer to neighbouring exhibitry still largely valid).

BTW: I am glad the Asiatic elephants are leaving Perth Zoo as it never has been the best marriage for each. Personally, I would go and vouch for an updated Asian section with some additional Asian species than just Sumatran tiger, all the Asian species up north-east side of the zoo (sun bear, gibbons, otters and Komodo dragons) orang utans (an outlier now with the Asiatic elephant exhibit effectively emptied....! I was specifically thinking of Asian rhino and some deer species. Ideally, I would love to see Malayan tapir also ....., but that episode was thoroughly screwed with the manner of tapir husbandry and accomodation features in Australasian zoos.... (well enough of that!).

I would have preferred to see that bull Putra Mas had moved much earlier (the entire musth period could have been easily avoided - these cycles are also a bad predictable and certainly in a long established bull at Perth Zoo rn) ..., but realise their logistics were off at Monarto (allthough not insurmontable in my personal opinion ...).

BTW: For what it is worth I do feel Australasian elephant management is far too cautious with their approach to animal transfers, inter-birth intervals and generally adopting more modern state of the art best practice in elephant management and husbandry.

I think all this really just comes down to cost because its taxpayer dollars instead of private. The great people who mange Perth zoo aren't silly, I'd imagine they'd MUCH rather expand Asian species then African, considering:
A. Its in a small Urban setting
B. City zoos are just better suited with Asian species
C. Covered with tonnes and tonnes of foliage.

Seems that African species are just much cheaper to import/maintain then asian.

Unlike Adelaide Zoo, who are just ******* insane for going ahead and making a mini monarto, I can see how an expanded African precinct can work at Perth zoo. Hopefully it turns out great and I will look forward to visiting when its done. :):)

What brought this on? Well, I never implied any of what you allude to here. I was far from critical of a re-arrangement of the African precinct. Just my main concern or - call it if you may - a personal favourite that the old Asiatic elephant exhibit remain in the Asiatic species realm.... Just!

Having said this, I do find it curious that acquiring African species might be deemed easier than Asian species. Given geography that becomes like ... a very peculiar one (how close are either Africa or Asia to Australasia...).

I don’t know why you took that as criticism, was nothing in it I directed at you. What I’m saying is if they could focus on Asian species being a city zoo they probably would.

However I guess Asian species being very expensive to import due to rarity, expanding African species and importing from interstate is a much more cost effective way to improve the zoo after the elephants, because it’s taxpayers money, then importing say like silverback gorillas (I know, African, but they do give off an Asian vibe though) or something more Asian themed. I’m sure you guys can understand what I’m saying :)

That’s good to hear I hope the rest of her journey is safe:) When the zoo start on the African Savannah expansion would it be done in phases like for 8 months it would be the lower Savannah and then once that’s done it would be the top half of the Savannah and the Elephant exhibits for a year and a half?

And does anyone know does a Perth zoo have places to keep all if species in the Savannah?

The African Savannah will open in stages and will take 2-3 years until it’s complete. The giraffe exhibit is essentially an extension, so they would remain in their exhibit (with the night house), while the adjacent elephant paddock is redeveloped.

I’m not expecting there to be redevelopment of Permai’s exhibit while Putra Mas is still there given the construction could be stressful for him.

as said here it will likley be done in stages, like how they did the lions all them years ago, do one part , open it to public and shut the other and redo that.

if i remember right there was an outline released a while ago that did show what they have planed up untill 2040, might have some info on there?

There hasn't been an official timeline for the projects apart of this masterplan. They will likely do it in parts rather than shutting off the whole trail for construction at once.

I'll paste the link to the 2040 Masterplan below, and quote the relevant paragraph about the African Savannah revamp;

Work is now underway to enhance the African Savannah that:

  • creates a dynamic and expansive habitat where giraffe, zebra, ostrich and guinea fowl roam together, much as they would in the wild
  • builds new giraffe quarters where visitors can go behind-the-scenes to see how we care for these giants of the Savannah
  • expands the meerkat habitat and creates a parallel children’s playground with exploratory tunnels builds a new visitor hub for education experiences and visitor amenities.
Obviously a Rhino extension has also been added to the plans too, with the elephants leaving.

I could see the amphitheater part of the habitat could start redevelopment since it’s quite far form Putra mas exhibit but the behind the scenes quarters would be once he leaves.

I’m not expecting any work to begin on the Savannah precinct until Putra Mas has transferred out as the priority project at the moment is the Primate Run. This is scheduled for completion in May, which will tie in with Putra Mas departing in June.

Works swing into action on Perth Zoo's newest attraction | Perth Zoo

As part of the works, the new 'Primate Crossing' habitat will feature overhead rope pathways along which gibbons can swing directly above visitors as they enter the Zoo.

This innovative design enables more space for the gibbons to move by tripling their habitat, while also giving visitors the opportunity to see the animals in action.

When I went to Perth zoo last Year in October I asked a builder when will it open and he said it would open early in April:) when Perth zoo put the animatronic Dinosaurs in Permai’s exhibit could that stress out Putra mas with there roar?

Primate Crossing was initially meant to open early 2025; then pushed back to April; now I’ve heard May in media reports from this week. It’s normal for projects to run behind schedule.

The dinosaurs shouldn’t be too disruptive to Putra Mas. The noise won’t be excessive and will be predictable if not monotonous versus constructive work which is louder and also unpredictable due to the variety of tasks being undertaken on a work site at different times.
