Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Just a note, this isn't an official confirmation of her arrival as of yet despite the title! However she should have arrive very soon if she hasn't already. Expect an announcement this afternoon.

That’s correct. It’s a clickbait article I also came across this morning.

Despite the title, it later contradicts itself with:

The team estimates that Permai will arrive at Monarto Safari Park by this morning (Wednesday January 28th), and while they plan to keep the public updated, their main focus remains on making sure she arrives safe and well.

However…Perth’s socials advise Permai arrived at Monarto Safari just over an hour ago - with footage of them pulling into the zoo. :)

Permai has officially arrived and has been uncrated in Monarto!

Just before Permais transfer, she received a very special visitor. Grant Harris, Permai’s former keeper for 30 years, came to say one final goodbye to his friend on his death bed. It was his final wish. Keepers say Permai instantly recognised him, and reached out to touch and hold his hand. He passed away shortly after.

Oh thats heartwrenching but heart warming at the same time, thanks so much for sharing with us Luke, rest in peace Grant. He'd be happy knowing Permai is safe and happy at Monarto.

I can’t wait in till he leaves I can’t wait for the African Savannah to get expanded. But don’t get me wrong but I would still miss him since he is my second favourite animal at the zoo number one is Jaya the Tiger.

I know how you feel. Part of me was disappointed to hear Auckland Zoo would be phasing out elephants after 101 years, but going to Monarto was undeniably an incredible opportunity for Burma and that in itself was hugely exciting. The phase out was inevitable and I’m now excited for the redevelopment of her exhibit.

Similarly at Perth, it’s a great opportunity to expand the Savannah and accommodate larger herds of giraffes and rhino.

I cannot wait for the bull Putra Mas to leave for Monarto and become a breeding bull proper and not one just for some AI venture(s)! Further, ... really looking forward to Perth Zoo being able to re-invent the area as part of their expanded African range at the zoo....

Yeah I can’t wait. I can’t wait to hear that Putra mas has bread with one of the females.

Perth’s followers will no doubt be delighted to hear news Putra Mas has sired a calf. Auckland Zoo were very proud to announce Anjalee’s pregnancy last year, with her need to breed cited as one of the reasons to justify the decision to phase out elephants. She (and Burma) meant a lot to the Auckland community; as do Perth’s elephants.

Back in 2005, it was believed Perth could welcome the region’s first elephant calf after a mating was recorded between Putra Mas and Permai. This came two decades after a mating between African elephants was recorded at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in 1986, which similarly led to anticipation of a calf. How fitting that Putra Mas’ first surviving calf was the first calf conceived at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. :):):)

Fingers crossed for a successful natural mating between Putra Mas and Pak Boon at Monarto. Pairing him with a proven natural breeder stands him in the best stead for success.

Apparently..... According to fellow docents.... After the unfortunate but expected passing of Kigana (Male Hyena) and its just Sabi (which could happen soon or could still be ages away) they may be bringing in some female hyenas either before, during or after the completion of the new hyena exhibit :) (Not sure who said it but it was mentioned that maybe the hyenas would use the left side of the tiger enclosure during the upgrade.... I definitely dont think that would happen and Jaya would NOT like it)

That’s interesting to hear Perth could potentially hold a female hyena/s with their younger male long term. There’s no shortage of options for females across the region, with Monarto and Sydney’s packs breeding well.

Due to the age of Jaya (elderly male Sumatran tiger), it would be kindest to allow him to pass before subjecting him to any disruption. I’ve similarly been advised a redevelopment of his exhibit will wait until he’s passed.

I totally agree. I believe that the females would be coming from South Australia (Not certain) possibly Monarto ( A trade for the elephants in a way) but I love the current hyena exhibit personally but I believe that they could do with 1. Slightly more space for them to roam around 2. a higher viewing point (To look down on to them) and 3. A larger swimming pool as right now yes they have one and Sabi loves it :) but it could probably be bigger in my opinion.
