Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Thanks for the clarification Steve :)

I have added some more photos of Ross and Lyra below and one of the agoutis.

Assuming Ross is male and Lyra is female.... I am wondering whether they are a breeding pair or not someone may have info or I will ask a keeper/docent on my next visit.

They are some of the best smaller primates in the zoo in my opinion, I think they are so cool and fun to photograph :)

Golden lion tamarins, Ross (male) and Lyra (female), are a retired breeding pair. Lyra originally came from Melbourne Zoo with a male named Ovo.

Ovo later went on to live in a bachelor group with Pygmy marmosets; while Lyra was then paired with Ross.

BIG wins for tiny tamarins

Lyra's apparently fifteen years old now. Her and Ovo would've been the last breeding pair of GLT's Melbourne had; they were sent to Perth in 2016.

Do you know where Ross came from? I know Adelaide has/had a breeding male named Roscoe.

Yeah possibly but I don't think I've ever seen them together but It might just be rare to see them like the porcipines ;)
i'v seen them both at the same time, however it seems easier to spot both on days where the zoo isn't as busy, i tend to sit and wait to seem them however so i might just get lucky

Fourthly I noticed Jaya was a bit skinnier today and was far more angry than he usually his (he was charging the glass at me when I was just standing there on my phone not provoking him at all which was weird. But I did get some good photos :)

did you happen to have a drink bottle anywhere visable? i noticed years ago he will sometimes charge the glass if someone has a bottle of some sort (havn't seen him do it since the decals got put up) didn't matter what drink it was but it was always bottles.

it's an interesting time for the zoo with all the changes, i do hope the reptiles get an upgrade, i spend way to much time with them lol , while they are fine i'd just love for them to get upgraded along with the larger animals.
i happened to find some old photos i have of the zoo from around 2002 i think , was interesting to see the rhino padock before it got split in to two (i only ever remember it as two)

Would you be willing to upload your photos of the zoo including the ones you found from 2002 to the zoo's media gallery on here? would be great to see them.

i'll try to find the 2002 photos again,i saw them when i was putting family photos in storage boxes, iv also been looking for an old zoo map i know my parents kept i think it was from the 1980s , i'v only seen it once but i know they have it some place.

Oh wow wicked, if its not asking too much that would be awesome to see also, really really cool. Thanks just even for trying to find maybe.

I think the Perth zoo African Savannah will be basically the retirement hub for non breeding African aniamls

Does anyone know if Perth zoo expands the Lion exhibit would the zoo get more lions maybe a breeding pair from Monarto or Taronga wp?

Before Covid Perth Zoo was supposed to acquire a breeding pair of males for Makeba and Uzuri from USA but unfortunately covid stopped it and then after covid the zoo lost its breeding recommendation and they have already expanded so compared to other aged exhibits I would say they are one of the last on the priority list :)

Yeah I remember hearing about those plans too - it's a shame they never eventuated as new genetics would've been very beneficial to our region which is largely descended from Auckland's and Mogo's former prides.

After speaking with a keeper I have been informed that for the foreseeable future there will be no red panda breeding as

0.1 Maiya is still at breeding age as she has done in the past but....
1.0 Sombar Has just reached an age to old for breeding and isnce there are no other red panda's there will most likely be no breeding for the foreseeable future.

I know we have said it most enclosures at PZ but the red pandas are really due for an upgrade especially looking at other zoos like Chester Zoo in the UK (they have a way nicer enclosure.... signs info etc..)

They've bred in the past and both come from well represented lines so I'm not surprised to hear there aren't any plans for further breeding with this pair.

Sombaar just turned twelve in December so it's surprising to hear he's now considered 'too old' to breed. Red Pandas can live into their 20's. He's certainly not old by any means.

As is the case with most species, males can breed throughout their lifetimes too.

Representation of the lineage seems like the most likely reason to cease breeding. Sombaar’s father sired his fourth and final litter at the age of 14 years; and there’s been many other sires in the region of similar ages.

The local news story i watched also mentioned that the Northern White-cheeked Gibbon Jermei is expected to have offsping as early as next month.

Follow up on Northern white cheeked gibbon birth:

It only just occurred to me that there’s been no follow up to this announcement from May 2024 that Jermei was due to give birth within the month.

Since no birth announcement from the zoo has followed, it seems likely the infant died. The infant mortality rate of this species is reasonably high.

I’ve contacted the zoo and will advise if I’m able to share any further details.

I just agreed not knowing his actual age etc.. But it was an experience carnivore rainforest who told me so I’m taking it as legitimate. And it’s also past breeding time (which for red pandas is only 24hrs) and so I’m not expecting any different news to what what I’ve been told :)

@Zoofan15 I can remember going to the zoo a few days after she was supposed to give birth and there was a docent at there viewing area and I asked what happened and she said the baby unfortunately passed right after birth. I can remember telling my Mum and she was so excited to here that Jermei was giving birth to a baby but once I told her the baby passed she cried for the next 2 days:oops:

Thanks for sharing @Jaiden. That’s sad news, though not unexpected in the absence of an announcement and given the reasonably high infant mortality rate for the species.

Looking at historical records, I see the region’s most prolific white-cheeked gibbon breeding pair (Tiue and Vang) produced ten offspring between 1982-1998, of half died as neonates. Of the five infants that died, four died the day they were born (with the other dying at 20 days old).

Jermei is 22.5 years old and has produced surviving offspring before, hopefully she will be successful next time.
