The Signs have been changed since around December 2024 but the new viewing glass has only been in for 2-3 weeks. No the Koala exhibit has not changed at all

From info supplied by seven news and hints from videos unfortunately Burma and Permai are not getting along
Apparently there is very high tensions and they having been pushing and shoving each other through the bars.... Now this is normal behavior and is expected but only usually lasts for a few week (unfortunately its been going on since Permai's arrival).... Not sure if being separated from Putra Mas (Male Bull Indian Elephant at Perth Zoo) is also an issue because whilst she did have a good bond with Tricia she was noted to really enjoy Putra Mas' company often fetching things to give to each other etc... Note: Burma is supposed to be the leader in their hierarchy and Permai should follow as she's never been a leader nor matriarch but she is apparently contesting Burma.....

Bear in mind this is relatively old news. They’re a long way from becoming ‘friends’, but they’ve been making steady progress since Permai arrived from Perth Zoo.
These things take time and estimates of them forming a bond in days/weeks were totally unrealistic given the demographics (two adult/senior cows).
Permai arrived at Perth as a three year old and Tricia essentially adopted her and the others as her family. The relationship between Tricia and Permai was not unlike what you’d expect to see in a mother and daughter. There’s been many examples of an adult cow joined by calves/juveniles doting on them versus the animosity or indifference they demonstrate to adolescents or older.

True but overall it hasen't quite worked out as expected. The info I posted was sort of relative but yes maybe they have come along way in 12 days, the updates from the zoo haven't been as frequent as I thought so hopefully things have changed

On a side note... I understand Permai and Putra Mas are around the same age but Teduh (correct me if I'm wrong the elephant that past away in the around 2007) was she the same age as them and did she come from the same place?

Monarto have been posting frequent updates including one today (see the relevant news thread). The media very much hyped up the idea of Burma and Permai becoming friends, which has fed an expectation of them forming a bond we know could take years to form.
Putra Mas (1989) and Permai (1989) are the same age. Teduh (1990) was a year younger. All were imported together in 1992 from Malaysia.
Teduh did indeed die in 2007. She was euthanised due to suffering from muscular skeletal weakness, which made it difficult for her to lay down/get up.

not only is it older news channel 7 gave slightly diffrent reasons depending on where you saw the news reported, the day after that report came out if i remember right monarto did do an update.
when i went last week the vollenteers at monarto said permai hasn't left the elephant house much, but i did see her come out, its just going to take time, and who knows maybe putra mas being there will help her when he moves over (more her just knowing an elephant she knows is near)

I think what will help Permai most of all is the arrival of the two cows from Taronga. While on the surface it may appear more unfamiliar elephants is the last thing Permai needs, it could take the pressure of her to interact with Burma/any of the others if there’s multiple elephants in the room so to speak.
Putra Mas will surely generate a lot of excitement when he arrives on site from all four cows.
On the other hand, it might result in much the opposite - Permai being further overwhelmed following the arrival of two additional cows.
I guess another positive is the arrival of the two Taronga cows will present Monarto with two very socially adept cows who will hopefully benefit the current situation for both Burma and Permai.

I would love to see them reunite But i also want Putra Mas to stay in Perth for as long as possible at the same time.

Same I think Putra Mas will be a role model of the African Elephant and can be apart of the African Savannah. And with I going to SA I can’t wait for him to reunite with Permai since they have spent there hole life together.But what we all agree on Permai will be happy to see Putra Mas and vice versa

I agree, I just don't quite understand the first part of your message Jaiden on African Elephant role model?
@Jaiden is referring to Putra Mas (and the other Asian elephants at Monarto Safari Park) fulfilling an ambassador role for the African elephants. This is common in our region’s open range zoos (which hold predominantly African species). My personal opinion however is that Asian elephants are what they are and should be recognised/celebrated for that. Zoos after all are supposed to be educational.
Unlike the cows, Putra Mas has large impressive tusks, so that aligns more closely with the public impression/image of the tusked African elephant.

Ahh ok thanks for the clarification. I understand what you mean, Often people will say they want to see a bear at Perth zoo, which they do have bears except they're not quite what everyone thinks they are not like the big brown or black bears but instead the small sun bears. Same with most Zoo's not holding Siberian Tigers whilst the public like to see massive tigers zoo's quite often can only hold smaller Sumatran Tigers like Jaya that require less accommodation.

The groupings do change around but @marmolady reported that in September 2024, Sungai and Lestari were co-habiting; Utama and Pulang were in their own exhibits; and Dinar and Teliti were in a shared enclosure.
Sungai and Lestari are related (and the zoo is on a breeding hiatus anyway), so it would just be a social pairing.
Dinar is unrelated to all the females at Perth; though it would come as no surprise to see him exchanged for Kluet at Adelaide Zoo for the next breeding pairings.

Anyone know what happens to the old meerkats- From a close encounter I was told that we had 3 males and 1 female all around 5 yo. Where have they gone?
Moved off display I believe it was said. They were all offspring of the former breeding troop, so would all likely be elderly now.
