Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Are any other species mentioned for the extended Giraffe exhibit?
I asked a docent at the Zoos exit and she did not seem to know much.

According to the masterplan, giraffe will share with zebra, ostrich and guineafowl.

It would also come as no surprise to see nyala share with either the giraffes or the rhinos (or possibly both via a filter-gate).

From the sounds of it - it will be a similar set up to Auckland's. A main savannah exhibit consisting of Giraffes, Zebra, Ostrich and guineafowl and then a secondary exhibit for White Rhinos and Nyala.

Yep, that’ll give them a month or so to get back into crate training. After a month they can assess where he’s at and make a call to do another month of training or take the plunge. It’ll be a huge operation logistically speaking, so they’ll want maximum confidence he’ll actually get in the crate on the day.

What they’re teaching him isn’t rocket science for an intelligent animal like an elephant (Taronga’s cows learnt it in three months), but he does seem to have an aversion to crates as evidenced by the failed attempt to ship him to Fort Worth.

question what is Fort Worth?

question what is Fort Worth?

I was referring to a failed attempt to export Asian elephant Putra Mas to Forth Worth Zoo in 2000. He refused to enter the transport crate and the move was abandoned. In response, Perth Zoo expanded their elephant facilities to include a bull exhibit and barn to accomodate Putra Mas.
Not quite sure on him leaving end of may….. There was a close encounter available on the 28th of May with him and I was always told June so I will find out more info.

June sounds more likely. Even the end of May wouldn’t leave sufficient time to resume crate-training in my opinion.

Thanks for clarifying :) I agree Zoofan May sounds a bit too close seeing as though he hasn't finished muthst yet.

100%. It’s optimistic to think they could pick up where they left off with regards to his training, which ceased as his musth cycle was about to begin. Although I hope the process won’t be as arduous as Putra Mas learning everything from scratch, to have any confidence this move will actually go ahead on the day, they really need this time to reinforce any prior training.

While the failed attempt to export him in 2000 has been of benefit to the regional population, it’s in his best interests he transfers to Monarto and so I have my fingers crossed it goes off without a hitch when the time comes.

Yes hopefully it goes well but the other part of me wants him to stay :( It won’t be the same :(

Notes from recent visit:

As some of you may be aware, there are currently view obstructing stickers on Jaya's (Male Sumatran Tiger) enclosure as a way to bring him closer to the glass and keep him less stressed.....

One of them has actually been removed and so for the first time in quite a few years we have been able to see out one of the windows like how it was pre 2020 ish. Not sure if this is because he is now getting more comfortable but unsure but it was cool to see him up so close to the glass.

It’s possible Jaya has grown more accustomed to visitors in recent years; but as an elderly Sumatran tiger, his senses (including eyesight and hearing) may have deteriorated making him less sensitive to the presence of visitors than he was in his younger years.

Western swamp tortoise hatchlings:

From socials:

This World Turtle Day we're excited to announce that our Native Species Breeding Program (NSBP) has welcomed 37 Western Swamp Tortoise hatchlings this year.

And the best part? We expect this number to grow with 4 eggs still in incubators and more ground hatchlings expected! This important work is being carried out in collaboration with DBCA’s Biodiversity and Conservation Science branch.

This is one of those ultra sexy projects any zoo would love to be involved with. Perth Zoo has been working towards recovery of the at one time near-extinct western swamp tortoise and has been pioneering its conservation breeding and conserving the last critical habitats the species was known from.

Perth Zoo on Instagram: "Celebrating #WorldTreeKangarooDay with those ADORABLE tree roo crunches ...or are we? "

Can someone explain why in this recent video of Huli the male tree kangaroo he is not in his enclosure but in some other place? Thanks :)
Looks like he's in a BTS enclosure. Perhaps Perth have a small off display enclosure behind their main enclosure. It's worth noting following the birth of the joey last year, he would likely be rotating on/off display.
