Perth Zoo Perth Zoo tigers

Dumai was usually unphased by visitors except for this video.

A perfect example of people behaving like idiots at the zoo. Note the tiger’s behaviour before (and even after). He’s cheek rubbing the glass (the closest he can get to the humans), which is regarded as a display of affection in felids (in addition to having the purpose of scent marking). Mother raised tigers may display this towards keepers they’re familiar with; but you’d never expect to see a mother raised tiger behave this way towards strangers/the general public.

Handraised tigers typically make ideal display animals and are a joy for their keepers to work with (Kemiri at Adelaide being a prime example); but of course the aim is to raise mother-raised cubs that are socially well adapted to interact and breed with each other.

When It comes to Jaya he acts on the way you act..... Some of my best photos of Jaya because I have acted calm he has noticed me and he as rubbed his head against the glass and then sat down right in front of me and just chilled out where'as when people scream bang on the glass and act frantic when they see him, he reflects that behaviour and will start roaring and charging the glass. There needs to be better signage as this to calm people down because I will see grown adults acting more childish and screaming more than their own child standing next to them quietly observing Jaya. The first photo is Jaya in a relxed mood just observing me and the second is when he was pacing and hissing at me. (Both photos taken by me and in this year)

Via confirmation from docents Perth zoo will look to start up a Sumatran Tiger breeding program after it being inactive since 2008. And possibly an echidna breeding program as we have not had echidnas bred at PZ for a while.

Edit- After the new enclosure for the tigers is built as so far it is unlikely for them to breed in Jaya's current old exhibit.

Just an FYI that you can edit old posts for up to an hour. This prevents clogging up the thread with multiple posts, when the same message could be conveyed in one.

Although I’d caution against taking the world of volunteers as gospel, the masterplan previously outlined a rotational exhibit concept for tigers and sun bears. The phase out of sun bears seems inevitable, so it’s possible these plans have been adapted to replace sun bears with additional tigers (with the tigers breeding rather than being a non-breeding sibling pair or similar). To resume breeding, an extensive renovation or renewal of the existing facilities would be needed; and nothing will happen until Jaya has passed.

A few months ago I was viewing Jaya and he was growling and attacking the air.
