I wouldn't know nowadays, but they'd be at the cheapest end of the pheasants You'd better start saving in your Piggy Bank (which is probably Hornbill shaped....)

You said the Cheaper end of the Pheasant market. What would the more expensive pheasants cost and What species would they be? Also, what other Cheap pheasants are there except the peafowl, Silver, Lady Amherst's and the Golden?

yep. thats right. and yes they have amazing courtship displays. i can't for the life of me decide which one i think is more attractive. they are both beautiful species..

anyone know if you can keep males of different species together if you dont have any females?

I watched an amazing courtship display of the sun bittern in London Zoo's new Core Rainforest exhibit last week - it was a very very impressive display indeed. I've posted a pic in the London Zoo gallery.

(well actually, I did see the queen of the Netherlands at the Rotterdam Zoo's 150th birthday celebrations, but it wasn't the REAL queen, so it didn't count ;)

But I digress......

Thanks for the tip Patrick- I couldn't see why no yellow box was appearing....

I've always thought Amhersts have the edge- Goldens are almost too gaudy in a way, but stunning nevertheless. In Uk a lot of Amhersts have(or had in the past) some impure blood from previouys crossing with Goldens- it usually shows in the males as red or orange marking on the white belly. Look at some and see if you can see this trait, if not, they're pure...

I believe they are pretty pugnacious- I know Amhersts can harass a single female to death by pursuing it relentlessly during the breeding season, they really need two or three hens to prevent this situation. Not sure about males together tho' without hens- probably okay during none-breeding months at least....

I am not in touch with prices of these birds anymore so have no idea what they cost nowadays. Silver pheasant used to be the cheapest of the lot though, then Golden(next lowest cost) AMherst's are a bit rarer so a bit more expensive. Get in touch with some pheasant breeders....
 
What zoos currently keep pheasants and peafowl here in Australia, and what kinds.
Ive kept these birds for most of my life, starting with a pair of goldens when i was in grade 5.
I dont think Melbourne has any on display anymore, Adelaide only had Golden cock birds on my last visit, Mansfield has Indian Peafowl and 1 Lady Amherst cock. Wagga zoo had a good collection 10 years ago when i visited but dont know what their current situation is. Who can help with other zoos current pheasant collections?

I know that DDZ has Ring Neck and Currumbin has Golden.

Edit: I also just remembered that on my visit to Taronga Zoo in December 2019, they had Golden Pheasant and Lady Amherst's Pheasant in their walkthrough aviaries in the Rainforest Trail.
