Philadelphia Zoo Philadelphia Zoo News 2020

Like some other zoos, Philly is going to remain closed for all of January.

Two McCord's box turtles recently hatched.

The flamingo chick passed away.

There's been a big shake-up with the pied tamarins. Philly send some to DWA and Toledo. They received some from Houston and Bronx.

A bunch of native trees and flowers were planted over the last few months, to help native wildlife.

And for the update we've been waiting for ... dinosaurs! They've changed the name, at least, to BIG TIME.

"Situated at the south end of the Zoo, BIG TIME will take guests through three evocative landscapes, each filled with sensory surprises and the most impressive dinosaur giants who will share the story of when these creatures ruled the planet.

AT BIG TIME…
• Walk among twenty-four, realistic, life-size, animatronic creatures, including Alamosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex and Quetzalcoatlus to discover the challenges these creatures faced from the Age of Dinosaurs through today.
• Encounter eight extinct animals including woolly mammoth and Aepyornis and other amazing prehistoric beasts that walked the planet long ago and experience what caused them to go extinct.
• Learn ways to turn the tide for endangered animals including iconic species in danger today like the African elephant, polar bear, Sumatran rhino and monarch butterfly who are facing threatened habitats and extreme weather events.
• Enact change to ensure a future where we can all thrive and live together on our incredible planet.

Music, sound effects, dinosaur Zoo keys and stories, collectible cards and special activities will make BIG TIME
the experience of the spring! Stay tuned for more information about BIG TIME in the coming weeks."

Wait, Flaca died? I never got to see her, and her survival story was really inspiring. Rest in peace little bird:(

Yeah :( According to the newsletter, she got very sick at the end of November and passed away.

Only one left. I saw him back in October I think. Should a new thread be made for this year?
I tried making a new thread twice, but each time it was either merged into the 2020 thread or outright deleted because the post to start the thread had no news in it. I have also been thinking about abandoning ZooChat. You can't delete your account but I've been thinking about leaving due to many of the members on here being very toxic.

Maybe if we wait until there's news, it hopefully it won't get deleted. Please don't abandon ZooChat! I can understand that some people might be a bit toxic, but you contribute with a lot of helpful information, especially on the Philadelphia Zoo news threads! :)

Per this news article, The Philadelphia Zoo was awarded $1 million to convert Bird Lake into a large outdoor habitat for giraffes, ostriches, and Ankole cattle.

I have mixed feelings about this. Bird lake has been there since the beginning and I really don't want to see it go. I'm also tired of seeing Ankole, an American breed of a domestic animal, in African savannahs, when there are so many other ungulate options.
I agree. The Philadelphia Zoo has such a wonderful long history and so much of what was wonderful about it has been changed in the past decade to the point that there is no evidence remaining of what made the Zoo so wonderful in the past. I wish Bird Lake could be revived as an area where visitors could see a variety of species of wild birds. Regarding the Ankole cattle, I love all animals, but really want to see only wildlife in a zoo, actually even in children's zoo areas.
