Philadelphia Zoo Philadelphia Zoo News 2022

Is there any word on what the zoo's plans for the small mammal house actually are? I know in the past, some zoochatters were speculating about whether the building would be demolished or reused for another purpose.
I don’t know. The signs just said future plans would be underway for the building. It could be converted into a restaurant, as previously mentioned.

As long as the animals within the Small Mammal House are retained in the zoo's collection and there's signage about the history of the building, I'm fine with it being a restaurant.

Some updates about small mammal house. The green fence in front of it has been removed and the front door says plans are underway for the building. We are down to 1 Degu, the hedgehog passed away and the tenrec moved to another zoo. No more Pygmy marmosets. Harvest mice have been moved to KidZooU but they are not on exhibit. The building is in the process of being emptied.

Are the vampire bats gone/did they get moved to another part of the zoo?

Well, there *is* another nocturnal section in the zoo. I'd be surprised if they were moved there, but I wanted to double check since I hadn't heard anything about them and I'm not sure what exactly the status of the building is right now.

I don't think that area could be set up to house them, but maybe? The vampire bat room is at least kind of separate from the rest of the small mammal house, so they'd likely stay there until the building had major construction going on, if they aren't sent elsewhere. ZooAmerica might be able to house them.

Took a screenshot in order to document the current status of this page. Interestingly enough, it shows that the vampire bats are "moving to a new location", and I'm personally curious as to what that would entail. I'm also curious as to whether they'll maintain meerkats near the Small Mammal House or move them elsewhere in the zoo.

I went to the zoo today with my friend since we both had a day off from school. I have some updates.
-The king cobra passed away on Saturday, October 1. She had a variety of age-related health issues in the last few months. Cataracts were discovered in an annual exam in April. Everything else was healthy back then but after that she also had other new health issues. It came to a point she was not doing well and they did an exam on Saturday. They discovered there was nothing they could do, so she was euthanized. She was estimated to be in her late 20s and may have been the oldest in recorded history. I have noticed she has had significant trouble shedding in my recent visits and in her exhibit she had many white patches of hard white skin leaving behind so I expected this to come.
-Update on the baby saanen goats. They are not spending all of their time with the rest of the herd since they are new, today they were behind a fence where we couldn’t pet them.
-Titi monkeys are back on exhibit in their original exhibit. Grogu the sloth is moving down to the other end of RACC where the eclectus parrots used to live.
-I found a follow up on Pepe the eclectus parrot’s passing. He had cancer for a while and near the end he wasn’t doing well so they euthanized him.

The vampire bats will move to Water is Life, where the dwarf mongooses used to live.

That weirdly makes sense seeing how it was a quasi-nocturnal habitat, and hey - at least they're *keeping* a species rather than phasing them out, but at the same time, that is really friggin odd. Why not Rare Animal Conservation Center or even PECO Primate Reserve?

Balen, the pied tamarin, moved to the Toledo Zoo last week. He needed a companion since his mate, Summer, died. We don’t know yet if we will add anything new to his exhibit like more pied tamarins or another species of monkey. Argyle the sloth still lives there and he’s perfectly fine on his own as sloths are solitary. Napoleon and Alcide are still visible on the other end of RACC.

Emma, the Amur leopard, passed away earlier this week, according to the zoo on Facebook. She was 20 and the second oldest Amur leopard in the U.S. The zoo still has two Amur leopards, male Nelkan and female Kira.

The zoo has announced the planned departure in 2023 of long-time Director, Vik Dewan. A search for a successor has begun.
Vik has shepherded the zoo from bankruptcy to stability, introduced Zoo360 and set the zoo on course for its future.
Vik has been a director like no other zoo director. Watch for the zoo to take a new direction with the next CEO
Vikram H. Dewan set to Leave Philadelphia Zoo, National CEO Search to Commence

The zoo has switched to winter hours. It's open Thurs-Sun, 930-3pm. The zoo is closed monday, tuesday, and wednesday. This is through January 8th, so looks like they'll be closing for January/February again.

Three animals have died at the zoo this week. The zoo has been so tough lately losing so many of its old animals.
-Ariranha, a female giant river otter, was euthanized a few days to a week ago due to cancer after months of treatment. She had cancer surgery, so she was more tired than usual in her last months. There was a sign saying that otters were under vet care, and now it has been removed.
-Moira Abby, the Mhorr gazelle, passed away a few days ago. She was the last of her species in North America and at 14 years old, was believed to be the oldest of her species in the world although we don’t exactly know. Although she was on geriatric care for a long time, including arthritis pain medications daily, and going inside earlier than the other animals in African Plains, she just died of natural causes.
-Bardot, the blue-eyed black lemur, passed away yesterday at 30 years old, and was the oldest in the world. She had been pretty healthy throughout her long life but recently keepers noticed she was having difficulty swallowing her food and she had repeated episodes of choking, so they euthanized her. She was the last of her species at the zoo, since her longtime mate, Stewart, died earlier this year. They are now reunited.

Additional news, the squirrel monkeys have moved to a new zoo.

Sad to hear about Moira! She wasn't the only one of her species though (Mhorr are the same species as Addra), or even her subspecies (there's some ranches in Texas with Mhorr). Just the only one in AZA.

Was Ariranha the mother of the others? I don't remember which is which.

I didn’t know there were ranches in Texas that keep Mhorr, but I meant to say subspecies not species. But from what I heard she was the last Mhorr gazelle in North America and the keeper who told me today also said that

Ariranha was the sister of Yeyuno and Thor. Their parents passed away a long time ago. They are trying to introduce Yeyuno and Thor to Matteo, Ari’s mate so they can live out the rest of their life as an elderly trio.

The keeper might not know about the ranches.
