This shouldn't take too long to explain. Phoenix was my home zoo for almost 11 years before I moved to Madison, and during that time, I've seen a lot of species come and go. Now, this won't be a perfect list; I am 100% certain that I'll miss some bird or herp or invertebrate that left the collection the day after my first-ever visit or something. I also had a "bollocks to Phoenix" phase where I refused to visit during 2017-2018, so some animals may have left during then. If anyone has anything they'd like to add, you're more than welcome to! Now, let's begin!

Africa Trail

Common Eland (Left late 2019-early 2020?)

Watusi (I think they might've left earlier?)

Mohr's Gazelle (Left by 2013 at the latest)

Gerenuk (2021, habitat now home to Nyala)

Kirk's Dik-Dik (unsure, shared habitat with Gerenuk)

Spotted Hyena (Huckleberry was euthanized in 2021, but the species will be back by next year)

Meerkat (gone by 2014-2015? Will be returning by next year)

Generic Giraffe (last one died in 2020)

Aardwolf (last seen 2006? habitat is home to an African Crested Porcupine)

Speke's Gazelle (displayed with the White Rhinos)

Tropics Trail

Ring-Tailed Lemur (probably left 2015-2016? habitat now home to Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs)

Clouded Leopard (unsure, I think their habitat is now home to the Jaguars)

Radiated Tortoise (left before 2011, habitat was demolished for Orangutans)

Agouti (unsure of species or date of departure, but they were kept with the Sakis and were replaced with Red Brocket Deer)

Capybara (left before 2010, habitat is now Alligator territory)

Sandhill Crane (left prior to the return of the gators)

Keel-Billed Toucan (replaced with Toco Toucans)

Indian Peafowl (free-roaming)

Coscoroba Swan (left 2019? lived with both kinds of flamingo)


Children's Trail

Raccoon (replaced by the Visayan Warty Pigs)

Koala (on loan from San Diego, left 2010)

Red-Bellied Piranha (left by 2014?)

Ocelot (RIP Padfoot, habitat is now home to Fernando the sloth)

Pemba's Flying Foxes (gone by 2013?)

Asian Water Monitor (last seen in the tent by the wallabies)


Arizona Trail

Andean Condor (left when the more appropriate California Condors arrived)

There were some native mice in one of the buildings, but I haven't seen them in a while and don't remember what kind they were.

Ambassadors

When I went to Zoo Camp in 2010/2011, there was a Rock Hyrax and Egyptian Fruit Bats.

MIA (Missing in Action/Unsure)

Giant Anteaters aren't on the map anymore, and while I saw Beaker behind the Maned Wolf exhibit a few times, I didn't see him this July.

The Fennec Fox exhibit isn't viewable due to construction for Predator Passage. The zoo wouldn't leave such noise-sensitive animals near construction, right? I'm not sure if they will be there once Predator Passage is done or not.

Say, where did the nocturnal animals like the Vampire Bat and Bushbaby live? Did Phoenix have a nocturnal house or something?

Yes, the second reptile area on the Arizona trail (the one that’s fully enclosed) used to be a nocturnal house. The bush baby lived in tropical flights.

Also I forgot to add Chinese Pangolin, Southern Three banded Armadillo, and Eastern Woodrat to the list

Can’t imagine people ever saw the Bushbaby if it was kept there.
And did they actually have a Chinese Pangolin or are you getting all of this from a Fandom wiki page?
(Not trying to sound rude, but your list lines up with their list and the Chinese Pangolin sounds like a “I added this animal because I want them to have it lol” kind of edit)

I envy you (in the nicest way possible).
I believe they still have a Three-Banded Armadillo as an ambassador.
In the real old days, they had a chimpanzee, American Black Bear, and American Flamingos.

(Animals that have come back) Predator passage saw the return of radiated tortoises and fennec foxes, and there’s a children zoo exhibit with baby tortoises of all kinds including the mentioned. Hyenas are also back. Ocelots and clouded leopards are considered to replace the old exhibits for the puma, coati, and white eagle once they move to big cats of az. The meerkats are to return in the near future as they have been delayed. This is where the tortoises are.

(Animals that have been gone) On my visit the storks with the zebras were gone and not on the map. Also, I believe the native mice were listed on some guy’s devianart phx zoo species list but i’m not too sure. I believe there are no european earthworms in the farm exhibit anymore. There also used to be spider monkeys (although i believe they are still present on land) on an island in the phx zoo 2009 map. There used to be a frog exhibit near the entrance with a bunch of frogs. If you look on the wiki *Im not using it for the species, only for the maps* an unspecified gibbon is listed on the map, on the island I mentioned the spider monkeys used to be. It is separate from the siamangs and currently the siamangs are the only gibbons. I do remember hearing about one of the islands being for gibbons a few years back.

the other gibbon (by Tropical Flighta) are Buff-cheeked Gibbons

*unrelated to the quote* I have noticed mentions of a former nocturnal house in the arizona trail, housing vampire bats, probably ringtails, and surplus black footed ferrets. Is there more information about when it closed, what happened to it, and what was housed?

The nocturnal house was the second reptile building (over by prairie dogs) on AZ trail. It had at various times the following species:

black-footed ferret
Western spotted skunk
Kit fox
Ringtail
Pallid bat
Vampire bat
Western screech owl
Desert tarantula
Giant hairy scorpion

it closed to make way for a temporary display of giant snakes in the early 2000s and was later reopened as a native herp exhibit

Are there any former species in the giants snake house that can be added to this thread?
Also, that was pretty interesting. It is quite sorrowful the only nocturnal house in the phoenix was closed. And our opportunity to get an african one in the predator passage concept art was not used.
