Phoenix Zoo Phoenix Zoo News

Any updates on the new front entry? They had previously announced that it would be done in time for ZooLights (which started a month ago), but there has been no mention recently so I assume they missed that deadline.

I will be there (for ZooLights) this coming Friday night with a couple other docents, so I guess I will see the progress for myself.

The new entry IS open

Ok, thanks. It is just with all they hype leading up to it, I am surprised there were no major announcements once it opened. I am on the zoo email list and while I get emails about ZooLights and other openings, there was no mention of the front entrance opening. Also no photos posted on ZooChat that I am aware of (I have not checked in the last several days).

I will post some shots in a week of what it looks like at night after I go for ZooLights this Friday.

Andean Bear born at the Phoenix Zoo

Andean Bear, Rio, gives birth at the Phoenix Zoo.

Rio, a 17-year-old Andean bear, has given birth to a cub at the Phoenix Zoo.

Rio and her cub are doing well, zoo officials said. This is the fourth cub for Rio, but for unknown reasons, all three in the past did not live more than seven days, the zoo said.

Rio and Billie Jean, an Andean bear at the National Zoo in Washington D.C., are the only Andean bears in North American zoos who have successfully reproduced since Billie Jean's birth six years ago. Billie Jean has had two sets of twins - one set in 2010 and another set born December 2012, just three weeks before Rio's cub was born.

Rio and her cub are in a maternity den where the family can bond in a quieter environment.

Zoo staff has been monitoring them through an audio baby monitor. It could even be several more weeks or months before zoo staff sees the cub.

This particular species has a high mortality rate, with first-year mortality at 41 percent for males and 44 percent for females.

The cub was sired by Rizarro, a 23-year-old Andean bear who came to the Phoenix Zoo in 2011 from the Pittsburg Zoo.

Andean bears are a small, arboreal, largely vegetarian bear from the Andes Mountains in South America. They are the only species of bear native to South America and are also called spectacled bears due to the white markings on their faces which make them look as if they are wearing glasses.

I'm surprised there wasn't a whole lot of hype either. I don't remember if it was even announced much locally. I think I saw a post on Facebook about it, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I'm so happy Rio's had another cub and I hope this one survives. I'd forgotten the Carnivore Manager had told me she'd been pregnant before but the cub had died within a week of birth. I haven't seen where it gives a more exact date of birth, but the article gives me the impression the cub has already reached the critical 7 days post-birth that the other cubs didn't make it past. I was told the zoo couldn't determine why the other cubs didn't survive. They did testing on both Rio and Willie and neither one had any genetic problems they could see.

Now for Hadiah and Caipora...

The latest issue of Wild Times is out and it has a section discussing the new "Deserts of the World" reptile display which is located in the southwest corner of the Arizona Trail Aviary. Species mentioned for this exhibit include Pancake Tortoise, Kenyan Sand Boa, Leopard Gecko, Saw-scaled Viper, Saharan Horned Viper, and Snouted Cobra.

Not a thing, but in this case, I have no problem with it. They already have two reptile areas chock full of native species, they are using this space to compare and contrast adaptations between native species and those from other deserts (eg. Sidewinder vs Saharan Horned Viper, Western Hognose Snake vs Snouted Cobra, etc...)

We will agree to disagree on this one. I still cannot believe they have andean condors in the large Arizona Trail flight cage, which completely ruins the entire trail IMO.

They don't. There are black vultures in that exhibit at the moment. Watch this space for future details.

Ahhh, very good to hear. If they put the andean bear cub on exhibit soon, I may have to make a trip back up there. (If Ituri or anyone else happens to hear a set date of when that will happen, a PM to me would be immensely appreciated).

Last I heard was this spring. The cub seems to be doing real well and the keepers have been able to see it and interact with Rio, as I'm sure you've heard by now (if you are on the zoo's FB page). I'm excited for the cub to go out on exhibit.

And I'm with you, Arizona Docent. I couldn't believe they had Andean Condors on the Arizona Trail, either. I know they were there only temporarily, but it was still odd to me.

According to multiple staff members its very close to reaching its funding goal for its new Sumatran Tiger exhibit. It could then go to bidding soon after !

Does any one know whats to become of the current tiger exhibit after the tigers are to move into their new exhibit?

Designs are currently underway on the tiger exhibit. The existing tiger exhibit will probably be incorparted into the master plan of the african section of the zoo which is currently being developed.
