Phoenix Zoo Phoenix Zoo News

According to multiple staff members its very close to reaching its funding goal for its new Sumatran Tiger exhibit. It could then go to bidding soon after !

Does any one know whats to become of the current tiger exhibit after the tigers are to move into their new exhibit?

Designs are currently underway on the tiger exhibit. The existing tiger exhibit will probably be incorparted into the master plan of the african section of the zoo which is currently being developed.

What I was told by the Carnivore Manager was that they hoped to merge it with the Lion exhibit. They can't breed the current male and female but the male is genetically valuable since he's a 2nd generation out of a wild pair. They would like to obtain a breedable female for him, but they can't breed until they have room to care for the cubs for a minimum of 2 years so they'd like to take the tiger yard for use with the lions, too.

The carnivore manager told me this last year, so it's possible things have changed.

It's interesting that someone from several states away knows more about the fundraising than a local. We haven't been told anything about fundraising efforts, just that they continue and please give money.

The only reason I know what I do is the firm I work for has done and is currently doing work there, including the new tiger exhbit. I don't claim to know what the fundraising efforts are I just know that we've been asked to start working on it. I have no idea of the schedule at this point. Regarding the old exhibit it very well might be incorporated into an expanded lion exhibit, or not......I'm not sure. As I said it is currently being developed and I'm sure when the zoo wants to publicly release the work they will.

I'm sorry. I was responding to both you and TeamTapir223. I wasn't disputing what you had said about how the old tiger yard will be used and I apologize if it sounded like I was. That particular comment was directed towards TeamTapir223. This wouldn't be the first time locals weren't in the loop about something at the zoo.

Again, my apologies for the misunderstanding. :D

We like to engage in conversation and ask a lot of questions when visiting other zoos and we ran into quite a few docents and staff on grounds during our visit and several believed it to be close.

That's a very good idea. All I meant was it's sad that you two know more than I do and I'm a local. hahaha. I didn't mean anything by it. I guess I just didn't word it very well. :D

Look out!!! Baby Komodo dragons are BACK at the Phoenix Zoo! Two new baby dragons arrived on March 14 and are now on exhibit in the Bush House located on the Children's Trail.

Does anyone know if the baby andean bear is now on exhibit?

No!On 4-24-13 the Phoenix Zoo posted a pic of him in his den.Several people questioned the zoo when he would go on exhibit and they responded that its up to Rio the mother and as of now she is letting him explore more of the den and night house but has yet to let him venture out into the exhibit.

Even more than a new name, he needs to be let out on exhibit. The amount of time they are delaying seems ridiculous.

The Andean Bear cub was named Luka. The Phoenix Zoo: Andean Bear Cub
AD- Here's what the zoo has to say about him going on exhibit:
"While he is not yet ready for his official public debut, and the trail to their yard is still closed to the public, we are also excited to announce that Luka has begun to explore the outside habitat with his mother, Rio. We know Luka has many fans eager to come see him for the first time and we are happy to say we are getting closer to that moment. We are just as excited to see your reactions when you get to see Luka in person for the very first time. Once he is available to view, there may be specific hours or days set up in advance that will be best for viewing. As soon as we have everything ready and all of the details worked out we will be sure to share that information with you!"

The bear cub was put on exhibit today and the zoo is now announcing it and making tomorrow the "official" debut.

(This is perfect timing. In one week I am flying out of Phoenix around 11:30am and I booked a fly and park deal for the night before at a hotel near the zoo and airport. I had planned on going to the zoo from 7-9am and hoped the cub would be out by then. Looks like I get my wish!)

Hopefully you get to see him. There's been nothing on Facebook posted about his debut (july 11th it was stated they were getting close and would announce it when it happened) but I heard about it on the radio this morning while I was driving to work...too late for me to plan to go see, but I have tomorrow off so I'll go tomorrow.

Enjoy your trip!

I just got an email blast stating (among other things) that the zoo is producing an official guidebook to celebrate their 50th anniversary. It will be on sale starting next month.
