Closed Photo comment notification...

Hello to all and in particular Sim,

I brought up this issue a few months ago:

Is it possible to have a notification in our control panel (similar to replies to threads we have contributed in) when we post a comment in a photo and there is a reply..?

Great idea Jeremy! We are notified here at ZooChat when someone responds to one of our threads, but since the photo gallery is now an enormous wealth of riches then it would be nice if we were also notified via our personal emails whenever a comment appeared under a photo.
 
it would be convinient to follow up on queries, i often wrote on a photo asking about a particuar exhibit or photo and then cant find the photo later to see the answer!
 
Yes, I agree that this would be a great idea.

The photo gallery software does have this capability built in, but I found it to be somewhat buggy and problematic so I had to disable it.

I have been thinking about how I might integrate it with the rest of the site more closely - to the point that the gallery works much the same way as the forum does.

I've even been thinking of using forum threads as the comment/discussion about individual photos ... but I'm not sure how practical that would be.

If I integrated the photo gallery much more closely with the forums to the point that posting a photo actually started a new discussion thread - that would make it much easier to discuss photos ... but I'm worried that it would clutter the forums with too many new threads (one per photo!!!!). I'll have to think about that some more.
 
That would mean many empty threads (as only the best photos would get posts) I suspect... Could you post if you can find a way for us to be notified if our comments on others photos are replied too..? It is really the only grumble I have with my favourite site...

Okay - in case you hadn't worked it out yet, the new gallery system uses discussion threads for photo comments, which means that the same thread subscription mechanism works now for photo comments.

If you have automatic thread subscription turned on in your control panel, any photo thread you post in will get subscribed and you will be notified when someone else responds - just like for normal discussion threads. You can also over-ride this on a thread-by-thread basis.
 
The photo gallery changes are now up and working beautifully! I love the fact that the almost 20,000 photos on this site are now finally taking centre stage with the regular threads and postings. I enjoy posting thousands of photos on ZooChat, and also seeing the close to 500 zoos that are represented from all over the planet. It's great to receive notifications when someone replies on a photo, and for many of us here the photos are challenging the written work as the best thing about the site. One thing that I did notice is that many of the photos that had been viewed many times in the past have gone back to zero again in terms of number of viewings, but that is a small detail and overall the new look of the site is fantastic. Great job Sim! I'm happy and content to remain a "ZooChat Supporter" for many years to come.

Yes - that is something I will hopefully get fixed over the weekend, I'll add on the view count from the gallery to the photos.
