It's been 11 months since I set a puzzle. This one is rather different. There are 24 eyes here for you to identify. Start with the first row and look across, tick off the species you can identify and write their English names in a list, leaving gaps for the harder ones to add later (but remember that some species have alternative names, so add them in as well - you made need to choose one of them later). Repeat for the other rows to get your long list.
Can you decode the message in this list?

In the spirit of April 1st, you can only submit your solutions by PM to my Inbox to me between 00.01 and 11.59 hours on the 1st of April. To make things fair for ZooChatters around the world, please include the time of your message and the name of your Time Zone and of course please quote the decoded message.

I realise that this will give people in New Zealand less time to solve the puzzle than people in Hawaii, but I don't think it is an awfully difficult puzzle because even if you can't find a letter or two, you can probably deduce the message.

I will post the solution and a list of the people who solved the problem and answered within their time limit.
HINT: this text contains a rather obscure hint, which I don't expect many people will need. Happy puzzling :)

I have received only 2 solutions to this puzzle, which was a little disappointing. Both were correct and within the time allowed, so I congratulate @Mo Hassan and @devilfish. Both of them were kind enough to say that they enjoyed the puzzle and I happen to think that it is one of the best I have devised.
I promised to post the solution and of course I will do so below, but in case anyone else wants to have a try, without the jeopardy of the April 1st deadline, I will add a Spoiler Alert here.

I was unable to participate during the time limit. I think this is what limited your participation, I would have loved to send in my answers but I was unavailable during April 1.
