Photography History

I'm not sure why there hasn't been more views of this thread. Hopefully adding a comment will get more people clicking on it. As you say, a wonderful series of historical photos.

Great collection of old photographs, I have always said there should be an area on here just for old black & white photographs they can tell us so much about the history of the subject.
Thank you for sharing with us

Very interesting photo record. A lot of the animals, including the Giraffes, rhino, antelope being given a drink, and the Grevy Zebra looking out of its crate, look very calm. Most of these species are highly strung and get very agitated if closely confined in crates for long periods of time. I guess this was long before there were any sedative drugs and I don't quite know how they survived the long sea journey successfully or how many would have been lost to crate damage/accidents/stress etc. I imagine the ones that arrived safely had become tamer due to the long human contact period at sea.

I thought the same when viewing the photos. The elephant in particular seems more like a tame one than a recently-caught youngster. I suspect that many of the animals were obtained as young (probably via shooting the mothers) and hand-reared before shipping. Animal collecting trips in the earlier days often lasted months (and often were in combination with collecting for museums), and there may have even been suppliers in the countries of origin who provided suitable animals for the collectors.
