Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium News 2023

I have been wondering that. Construction begins in the spring and will take nine months.

From what I've seen, most places redoing their entrances have been doing so over winter, when they could close for a bit without a major hit in revenue, or at least stay open but have a lot less visitors who might complain.

I'm curious how they're going to build it on the site of the current entrance without having to close it at all.
When Roger Williams Park Zoo re-did their entrance a number of years ago, they used a temporary entrance in a gate next to the main entrance during construction. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it prevented the zoo from needing to close. Depending on the space and gate configuration at Pittsburgh, they could have a plan to do something similar.

Yeah, I just don't think there's room for that, especially with how wide this new one is going to be; they need room on the sides for construction, sidewalks, etc. and Pittsburgh doesn't really have that space. There's at least one other place where they could let people into the zoo from, but there's no parking there.

The new restrooms are needed down there because the closest ones are at the top of the escalator. If you traveled a long time to get there, it is a bit far. The entrance needs to be better organized too. Especially when the parking lot is eventually redesigned to go along with the park that is being added in the parking lot by the main road.

This discusses the park I mentioned.

Those are ape footprints….
The zoo’s member newsletter that I received today touted the addition of a skylight to the orangutans’ habitat in the tropical forest. Unlike most skylights it can also open to allow in fresh air and maybe even rain.

Unfortunately, I don’t see them pressing forward with a whole new habitat if they’ve just made this modification after 31 years. Sigh. Hope I’m wrong.
Hmmm….

Not sure if I can post this here, but when it comes to generating excitement or informing the public of new projects, is there any American zoo worse at it than Pittsburgh has been over the last thirty years? Not sure if that’s all Dr. Baker’s doing or not(?). Hopefully the new guy understands the importance of generating enthusiasm amongst the general public and corporate community.
