Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium News 2024

I saw a photo online recently of protected contact between a keeper and elephant. However, on my visit last week, I did notice they still have their elephant herding dog. The dog was inside the barn. Are they allowed for a zoo to be AZA accredited? I think at some point Seneca Park Zoo had a barn dog as well.

I'm pretty certain that Rosamond Gifford Zoo still has a dog living in its elephant barn. Reading the AZA accreditation standards, I see nothing to indicate that housing a dog in an elephant barn is a violation of AZA policy.
I’m almost 100 percent sure that they will need to get rid of the dog if they plan on getting accredited by the AZA again.
Why are you so certain of this? Do you have any specific historical instances or quotes from AZA accreditation standards to back up this assertion?

Saying they'd need to "get rid of the dog" is completely ridiculous too, because even if there is something saying the zoo can't have a dog in its elephant barn (which I don't think there is), there is certainly no AZA standard banning zoos from housing dogs altogether, so they could easily move the dog to elsewhere in the zoo if they wanted.

The dogs are owned by the zoo and do not serve the purpose they originally had.

As I've stated before, both ICC and Pitt have been majority PC for over a decade now with only select staff being able to work them FC. Since the long time elephant manager left, they now have been even further practicing PC techniques with both herds

sorry that I wasn’t very clear but it’s just mere speculation. But just wondering would the zoo retire their elephant herding dog or no?

This week on Instagram the zoo teased a new butterfly exhibit for the top of the hill beside Jungle Odyssey. All the talks and plans over the years for this valuable acreage and they’re installing a common butterfly walkthrough to take up a chunk of that space.
The walkthrough just looks horrible in person. It's sitting in the middle of a flat area of land with a few trees sat around it, it's almost completely barren. What a comple waste of space

It doesn't appear to be permanent. It is a hoop house. The zoo's current focus will be renovating the front of the zoo and the new orangutan outdoor area (which I do not know where that is going). I think the zoo wanted to put something up there (at least temporarily) since there is nothing else on the path between Jungle Odyssey and the Aquarium. The zoo needs to do some other upgrades like the new giraffe barn before they build anything permanent up there.

One of the zoo's Orangutans, 0.1 Ember, is now at the Indianapolis Zoo.

Via a reddit post, the orangutans will be temporarily relocated to another facility during the construction of their new exhibit.

Any chance this is related to future construction? Has anyone been on site lately?

Also, does anyone know how many orangutans the zoo had/has in their care? Didn't see Pittsburgh mentioned in the orangutan population thread.

New website unveiled for the zoo mentions master plants According to a To Facebook question about the history of the zoo they mentioned that all current it’s mansions and renovations are on hold not sure why

The zoos female Northern Elephant Seal has passed away. Especially sad as from what I know she was the only member of her species on public display

Pittsburgh Zoo took in another northern elephant seal named Nessie back in 2020 but I don't know if she's still there.

I don't think the species list on their website is anywhere near complete either.

Nessie passed away in 2021, the zoo never reported it.
