Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium News 2024

I cannot believe they’re charging for this. Dr. Goodman is all about upcharges so far.
They recently brought back the train. It’s not as thrilling as it used to be.It’s now a trackless train and it only goes about half the distance that the former train went not even that maybe but it is also an up charge of four dollars and what they do is it gives a little bit of a story of some of the Pennsylvania Native Species And they just have a giant fence where you could tell if you know the zoo history where the train used to go placed there

Any indication what’s replacing the elephant seal? They already have a sea lion enclosure so the obvious answer is out.

Could they bring back king penguins now that they're back in the AZA? I think they were forced to send them back to the zoo they were on loan from when they lost their accreditation.

Is the male black rhino still there? I visited a few weeks ago and I think the one I saw was the female.

Hopefully the zoo is able to procure another elephant seal. I'd hate to lose a unique species.

Them receiving accreditation may be a game changer for several species at the zoo (elephants primarily was my thought). Fingers crossed we see some more significant updates to both the exhibits and overall animal collection in the coming years!

There are sea lions in that habitat. I think they still have an elephant seal if I am not mistaken. One named Nessie.
Nessie is deceased.

According to the most recent MMIR I reviewed (August 6, 2024), there remains one female Northern Elephant Seal in captivity in the US, currently located at SeaWorld Orlando.
The individual stranded and was taken to SeaWorld San Diego 6/7/2023, and then moved to SeaWorld Orlando 01/25/2024.

Piece of July 2024 News Worth Mentioning:

On July 16th, it was reported that the zoo transferred (0.2) cheetahs named Shani and Taj to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Alabama.

On September 27th, the zoo announced they acquired (1.1) bald eagles named Justice and Liberty from the Alaska Raptor Center in Alaska which are on display in the Kid's Kingdom area.

The entry, giraffes, and orangutans were among Pittsburgh's less successful components when I toured the Zoo back in 2018, so to hear these will be first in line for the master plan sounds great! The mixed-species habitat that incorporates Malayan tapir is also a nice bonus, and I believe would make Pittsburgh the first in America to mix tapirs with great apes (am I sensing a renaissance for this species lately?). I find it interesting though that the siamangs are getting a whole new exhibit not even a decade after they were added to the Islands complex. Perhaps the gibbons could move out from Tropical Forest?

I am really looking forward to see how the orangutan, siamang and tapir mixed exhibit turns out.

This article is the first I’ve seen that details each stage of the plan as it stands now. Personally, I think the “village” entryway revamp should be a priority. I find it depressing and a poor way to welcome guests into the zoo. The idea of flamingos, anteaters, basically anything, on that side of the road can only be a good thing.

Few Questions:
• Is it possible to do the zoo and aviary in the same day?
• When will the orangutans return?
• Is it possible the elephant seals return?

It depends on how long you spend looking at individual species. It’s probably possible if you move with purpose and don’t do any special programming at the aviary. I think it’s really worth doing at least one bird show, though.

Elephant seal availability is entirely dependent on non-releasable wild seals. It can’t be predicted when but they probably will get some more eventually.
