Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium News 2022

There were plans for a huge painted dog exhibit that were scrapped after the incident at the zoo.
Black rhino, cheetah and Grevys zebra were all planned to be out there but the focus was on the elephants first.
It temporarily held a bachelor herd of Springbok until they were sent out to other zoos and currently there are a couple of giraffes being held after the fire happened at the Port Clinton safari.

One thing on the new director’s itinerary? Make the off-site International Conservation Center more accessible not just to the community, but also to other species like the whooping crane.

Protecting elephants: New Pittsburgh Zoo CEO wants to make Somerset conservation space more welcoming

On a side note, I thought ICC always intended to bring in other species like black rhino and wild dog. I’m guessing that fell through originally?
Darn right time they did something about the site now.

I would welcome all species suggested and tons more. The site has potential and I reckon the new director does see the benefits and importance of eipanding appeal and conservation breeding.

The young lions have moved out:

News: Lion Cubs Move South | Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s three African lion cubs have been successfully relocated to their new residence at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. The cubs, named Daniel, Chadwick, and Regina, were born in July 2020 and, having reached maturity at two years old, have been relocated to enjoy additional space and prepare for future breeding opportunities.

Three adult lions remain in residence at the Pittsburgh Zoo: Kit, Abana, and Scarlett, the cubs’ parents and aunt, respectively.

A piece of news not mentioned:

On February 28th, the zoo announced they have tried to artificially inseminate their (0.1) ocelot, Sooma, which turned out to be unsuccessful.

And if by "changes" you mean get rid of polar bears and replace the Tropical House with a brand new if not ever-so utterly mediocre version... (Can't believe I gotta say this is a joke to cover myself)

I don't think the polar bears is up to him. They have one bear and she's super old.

Tsuni, the African Elephant calf at the ICC, celebrates her first birthday today. The odd thing is that her mom, Sukiri, isn’t in any of the photos the zoo posted on their social medias. Pittsburgh has not been very clear about Sukiri and Tsuni’s bond this entire time so not sure if they're together atm or not. I hope I’m just reading too far into this and mom and calf are doing well together.

Just a reminder. As of Sunday, it is the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. On the zoo map, it will just say Aquarium for the aquarium.
