News from Pittsburgh Zoo

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium announces The Islands, opening June 2015 featuring an island atmosphere full of native island species including siamangs, Visayan warty pigs, clouded leopards, and Philippine crocodiles. See the links below for more information.

The Islands

A new exhibit area, The Islands, is scheduled to open in June 2015. The Islands will offer an immersive atmosphere with cascading waterfalls, ponds, and the unique sounds of endangered animals. As visitors make their way along the winding pathway, siamangs, a primate species well known for its incredible vocalizations, will greet them. A distinctive Mohawk-like fur pattern on the critically endangered Visayan warty pigs will introduce the public to this animal never before exhibited in Pittsburgh. Further down the pathway, young and playful clouded leopards will enthrall the public with their playful and acrobatic movements. The more sedate yet intriguing Philippine crocodiles, one of the most endangered reptile species on earth, will eye visitors as they walk by.

As part of The Islands expansion, the former Safari Plaza restaurants will also be undergoing refurbishments and improvements. The new eating area, Jambo Grill, will include more indoor seating, an outdoor patio area, and a terrace that will allow diners to take in panoramic views of the elephants, giraffes, zebras, and cheetahs below. With these enhanced views of the animals and the thematic décor of Jambo Grill, visitors will enjoy an immersive experience that is truly reminiscent of an African safari.

As the facilities improve, so will the menus. The renovated Jambo Grill will offer more options alongside healthier choices for visitors of all ages, while maintaining the beloved traditional Zoo food such as chicken tenders and fries. When all of the improvements are completed, this area will be an idyllic spot to take a load off and refuel before continuing the journey through the Zoo.
