Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium 2020 News

Six African cheetah have arrived:

Five new female cheetah cubs and their mother, Naya, are now settling in at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium after being transferred from a Virginia facility (Edit: Metro Richmond Zoo).

Zoo officials said Zola and Rey, the zoo’s previous pair of female cheetahs, have moved to a new home where they will have families of their own.

The cubs were born October 20, 2019 and the zoo is inviting people to vote on names. Full article here: Pittsburgh Zoo welcomes five new cheetah cubs and needs help naming them

Has anyone been to the zoo since it has re-opened? I have read on other sites that they are, unfortunately, not enforcing masks. I'd really like to go, but I'm also hesitant if it isn't safe.

The zoo was recommending masks up until all of Pennsylvania was mandated to wear masks. They are now required as of July 1st. I have not been there, so I am unaware of their implementation of the mask requirement.

Don’t take my word for this, but there appears to be some kind of chameleon species in what appears to be Worlds of Discovery (probably the bat flyway section of the building). It is quite large and all gray.

Do you think the whole lion pride going to be able to go out on exhibit all at the same time or would they have to do rotations? They currently have 1 adult male, 2 adult lionesses, 1 female cub, and 2 male cubs. I think that if the male accepts the cubs, then everything should be fine, but if he doesn’t, put the cubs out on exhibit with their mother and pair the adult male with the other lioness. The adult male should be accepting of the cubs because he sired them and also male lions are a lot more gentle and tolerant of cubs compared to other adult big cats. I would love to see Pittsburgh have a true pride dynamic, which is something they haven’t really had for a long tome. Ajani and Razi were brothers and isolated from the females, the two sister lionesses that they had were always on exhibit together and several years ago, Juma and Shiba were always paired together. They haven’t really had a true pride dynamic, it’s usually been just two at a time.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium clashes with City Council over proposed ban on alligators and crocodiles

Hmmm. Looks like the accreditation issue is starting to affect other aspect of the zoo. Especially the zoo's relationship with the city.
Cannot read the darn thing thanks to not sorting out privacy/security issues for overseas readers.
I do appreciate if you can give a small explanation of what the new rift is all about. Thanks!

What species does Pittsburgh have in terms of Crododilia.

I can answer this! They have a male American Alligator, named, Otis residing in Kids Kingdom, they have Philippine Crocodiles and if I’m correct they recently acquired gharials in either March or February. I think the ban is because only AZA-accredited facilities can house crocodilians in Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh is ZAA accredited and no longer AZA accredited because they dropped their AZA accreditation in 2015 because they didn’t agree with the AZA’s protected contact policies on elephant management. I hope this helps answers your questions!
