The cooler weather has arrived so you most likely won’t see the animals of jungle odyssey until spring (except for the fossa and ocelot which will be weather depending)

The article neglected to mention that non-AZA zoos actually *can* participate in Green SSPs; they just have to fill out a Non-Member Participation Application for the SSP in question.

That being said, leaving the AZA clearly has taken its toll on Pittsburgh. I can’t help but wonder if it will attempt to re-join once the current management is out. I still don’t see how they benefit from leaving.

I wondered too what rationale behind leaving AZA. I cannot see what benefited them since leaving.
The main reason from leaving was the zoo was asked to stop the way the keepers interacted with the elephants, and we refused. I don’t say it, but I’m not a fan of how the zoo works free contact with the elephants

A singular reasoning from management, ... I wonder if it is / was worth it (???).

Leaving the AZA doesn't mean the zoo cannot participate in SSP programs. When Toronto was given the boot over its elephant debacle it participated as a non member participant in all its former ssp programs for two years. Not a single animal was removed due to non member status. It became more difficult to get animals recommended. Some zoos have strict rules about sending its animals to only aza zoos even in defiance of an SSP recommendation. But not all zoos say no. It's definitely harder for zoos who are not members but its not impossible to still be involved. And placing some animals became harder but generally they left even if it took longer.

Now to be fair Toronto was given the boot through no fault of its own (stupid city overstepped) where as Pittsburgh chose to leave. That might have an impact. Hard to say. Participation in SSP programs though is still possible. Plus many other zoos participate as non member participants.
