Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

The pittsburgh zoo & PPG Aquarium has 2 NA black bears and 2 polar bears. yes are spectacled bear named rizz went to the phoenix zoo on a breeding recomendation. and rocky will be gone almost 2 years now. wow:(

Team Tapir im kinda curious on what you think bout this idea but i would like to see thim kinda convert the bear grottos into a mountain exhibit and put the snow leopard in it.

@Jusko88 We love that idea and actually its something we have talked about before.I guess brilliant minds think alike :D

The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium celebrates the birth of its first baby gorilla since 2001. The baby boy's father, Mrithi, was the first gorilla born at the zoo.

They Call Them Blue!

There is another new addition to the Tropical Forest- blue monkeys. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce this species because there one of only four u.s. zoos to exhibit them. There population in North America is phasing out and there not able to continue to grow. But there not endangered in Africa. Our three blue monkeys, two females and one male are alternating with the mandrills, but in the future, the hope to intoduce them together.

While its cool that Pittsburgh is exhibiting these beautiful monkeys we are'nt too crazy about more primates sharing less than spacious exhibits.

Animal Health and Education Center

Here is a link to and article on the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium's Animal Health and Education Center.

Zoo nears completion of Animal Health and Education Center

It will open this year, but the public aspect to the new center will not open until 2013. I am wondering if they are waiting to open it with the new reptile building since they will be near each other. This would make sense since there would be nothing else down that path until then.

@Tigervalley98: Where i work at, one of my co workers has a buddy whos on the construction job at Pgh zoo and he told em that there doing this in stages the 1st stage is the hospital 2nd stage is reptile building and 3rd 4th stage Top of world exhibit and i heard there gunna try to open it in 2013 all of it. plus the bear grottoes are gunna be gone by then.

It is good to hear the Top of the World will arrive that quickly. My only request is that they add a conveyor belt to the black bear exhibit. This way they will not have to wake up Stanley to go on-exhibit & off-exhibit, since this the only time he is awake. The other option is to get Susan a forklift and she can use it to move him back and forth each day since she sleeps a little less them him.

I am wondering who (or what) will move into the current Komodo dragon exhibit since Noname's death. Since Komodo dragon(s) are suppose to be in the new reptile building, will something new be placed in that exhibit.

thats funny you say that cause i was just talking bout that with my gf bout that hospital opening a komodo dragon breeding center and there main source just passed away rip. and that reptile house expect alot of big reptiles from what a they told me on facebook. now back to komodo dragon im going to the zoo tomorrow then im heading up to toledo zoo for a visit on sunday. imma gunna try to figure out what there going to do with that situation. I know Ogelbay Good zoo had two baby komodo dragons on exhibit when i went last year. are they going to get them? idk? I know Los Angeles zoo had recent Komodo Births. are we gunna receive a couple from them? who knows? I figure it out. if they dont what animals would you like to see in the old komodo dragon exhibit?

@team tapir: idk how big all i know is that its going to hold bigger reptiles like anaconda and phillipine crocodiles. so possibly big :)

Is this a joke? I am confused by this statement.

How about adding African Penguins to the zoo.The exhibit could be converted to house them.Having more penguin species would be fiiting since Pittsburgh is often associated with penguins because its NHL team.

were talking bout the komodo dragon exhibit in the asian section. so im thinking some asian species. there probably goin to put the phillipine crocodiles in there since they had them for awhile but never had room to put them out on exhibit. I wish they could build a Matschie's tree kangaroo, kinkajou and Prehensile tailed porcupine so they could put them on exhibit but at the same time they might go in with the top of the world plans. I see the zoo wants to bring in a pig species for the new exhibit i hope its the Pygmy Hog. Im just so glad that finally the snow leopard and Orangutan are getting bigger and better exhibits. It says spectacled bear but we just sent are only male spectacled bear to phoenix zoo on a breeding recomendation program. so idk if plans are to brin in more or jut forget about that species. and since the bear grottoes are going to be torn down i wonder what there goin to do with the two black bears? maybe akron zoo for grizzly ridge even thou the two balck bears from erie zoo are goin to akron zoo.

blospz - My reference to Stanley and using a conveyor belt or forklift to bring him on exhibit was an inside joke. Stanley's usual day is going outside on exhibit and falling asleep near the door to the back area. He wakes up when it it time to go back inside. He does not even wake up usually for enrichment. The keepers leave enrichment for him in his back area. I thought the use of a conveyor belt or a forklift would allow him to just continue to sleep and not have to wake up enough to go indoors to outdoors or vice versa. Sorry for any confusion.

jusko88 - I found the plans for Akron's Grizzly Ridge exhibit online earlier this year when they were looking for bids. They are no longer online, but I saved some of them as jpegs for reference as the exhibit is build this summer. The bear building will have two exhibit areas, six indoor dens, three night yards, a training/night yard area, and a diet prep area. There would be room for Stanley and Susan, but that would make six bears in that facility making it a little crowded. I think two three-year old black bears and two two-year old grizzlies might be a big enough challenge for when the exhibit opens in 2013. They could send them at least temporarily to Erie to live after Laurel and Libby move to Akron. By then, Erie would be used to having black bears as guests. Laurel and Libby are slated to leave Erie in late fall when the bear building is hopefully done.

@Jusko88 We were thinking possibly African Penguins because that areas geographic zones are not clearly defined despite being across from Snowleopards and amur tigers its also right down the way from flamingos and black rhinos.Any how we also thought that red pandas would be a nice idea too.

Does anyone know if Pittsburgh is going to be getting zebras again? There has been a sign up in front of the savannah exhibit stating that the zoo has sent its zebras to the Olgelby Zoo in West Virginia and is expecting to get a new and more endangered species of zebra. We are also not sure what species of zebra were originally here because the signage is generic and has no scientific name it just says zebra, with a couple of generic facts.

In other news PPG aquarium staff has informed us that they would like to turn the former sea dragon tank in the front lobby into either a puffer tank or an eel tank.

I went to zoo today and I'm in Toledo now goin to that zoo tomorrow for the first time. Anyway the tigers have a new cave for them to lay in pics will be up tomorrow. Umsai the male elephant from Germany was out. Leafy and weedy seadragons will not be on exhibit anymore in the tank right when you walk in. The breeding between each species didn't work out and the cost to have them is expensive. The two sea lions from national zoo are still at the zoo. I didn't find out what's goin on with komodo dragon exhibit but my guess would be that they'll put either west African dwarf crocodile in them or the philipine crocodile.
