Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

I'm going to the Pittsburgh Zoo tomorrow. While it's winter, hopefully a lot of animals will be out. I don't know their temperature cut-offs but if theirs are similar to most zoos I should see almost everything. I haven't been to this zoo in four years so i assume a lot has changed. Since I haven't seen a huge one yet in this thread, I'll post my comprehensive review when I get back.

If you check out the thread "Snowleopard's Epic Road Trip" there are reviews of exactly 30 different zoos & aquariums across North America, including the Pittsburgh Zoo. I was disgusted with the "Tropical Forest" building and it's awful, fake primate enclosures, and the bear grottoes are the worst of their kind. However, the children's zoo is enormous and worth seeing, and the aquarium is quite impressive. I'm torn on the "Water's Edge" exhibits as the polar bears have a lot of concrete to crawl over before hitting their pool. Overall I would rank it as one of the weakest zoos that I saw on my long summer road trip.

I would like to exactly how much it has changed since I've seen it. Other than Water's Edge, it hasn't expanded much although it had a number of significant births this year. I will get to see a few relatives of animals at the Columbus Zoo though!

I wonder why the Toledo Zoo sent the girls there? I didn't know they had capacity for four bears! Plus the girls were some of the only available Polar Bears for other zoos - such as Columbus. Well maybe we will see breeding in the future - but again they don't have capacity.

This move is probably to free up space at Toledo to rebreed their adult animals. It doesnt really make since for any zoo to have 2 breeding pairs? of polar bears...so maybe Pittsburgh is holding all those bears until space is available to send some of them too.

Here is a video of the girls swimming in their new home for the first time.
