Planet Zoo Planet Zoo!

I played Planet Zoo for the second time today. Despite not being able to access the tutorial, I’ve managed to work a few more things out. I love the genetics aspect and how it plays out with the offspring.

A few of questions:

1. Can females not breed again until their offspring are fully grown? This is all well and good for a species with a two year childhood; but seems a bit silly to have a female Western chimpanzee out of action for 15 years, when in real life she’d breed again 3-5 years after her last birth.

2. What’s the largest litter you can have of African wild dog pups? I’ve bred five litters to date, ranging from 1-3 pups.

3. Can the great apes ever have twins?

1. Some species can breed again before young become adults, tortoises for example, but I don't know about apes. Asian Elephants don't seem to breed again till calves are mature (12 years old!).

2. What ever the zoopedia says, they used to be able to have up to 15 pups but soon realised it was silly to have it realistic in the game (in the beta I had 20 odd monitor lizards born from the one "birth") but know its limited to 1-3 I think.

3. Don't think they can, I have not heard of them having twins.

Just bought the game! Hope to play it soon.

Day 3 of playing and I’m really enjoying it now. At first a lot of aspects seemed unnecessarily complicated but that’s probably a sign of a good game.

If I can give you one piece of advice. Any building (no matter how accessible it may appear) is inaccessible to staff unless a path is placed precisely at the entrance point. The staff are apparently idiots.

I’ve only had chance to play for an hour or so at a time so the learning process has been slow. My next mission is to find out what a research building is for (I’m hoping genetics are involved somehow).

I don't play the game, but from what I've understood watching videos of the game, you can access a research tab in the zoo menu (bottom left) and vets can be assigned to research a particular animal or disease. Researching an animal unlocks more enrichment and food options for said animal. I believe each research centre can hold a certain number of vets at a time, and a vet without access to an empty one will wander around. There is also a mechanic research tab as well which requires a workshop building to be constructed, and works in a similar way except it requires mechanics. A vet or mechanic will abandon the research if there is an animal to treat or something to fix. Hopefully somebody who has the game will correct me if I'm wrong.

Pretty much spot on, but also you need the animal in your zoo in order to be able to research it as vets need to visit their habitat.

You can assign work zones so they just research and wont do any animal related work.

Update this week has fixed my zoo that had infinite load screen zoo!!! :D

Finally back playing it, but mostly playing to build funds up to safe guard my zoos.

Just curious if there is any other way to get rid of baby animals in this game other than literally feeding them to the wolves; or depriving them of food/water until they die? They apparently can't be traded, released or rehomed like adults.

It seems kinda brutal to periodically expose my surplus Spingbok calves to predation; but then I remind myself that they are merely a composition of pixels and continue to refine my breeding programme by retaining only female calves of gold standard. Still, it doesn't sound very sporting...

On a related topic, is there anything that will eat Galapagos giant tortoise hatchlings? The wolf that took out forty Springboks said no more; and the Gharial aren't biting.

Stop breeding them then if you don't want anymore babies.

Or build another habitat for just the babies and once they mature you can sell on.

The aim is to achieve a high enough output to sustain herd numbers. Even with genetic planning, only around 1/3 of the offspring produced are sufficient for this (gold standard females); the rest are either males; or silver/bronze standard females. The only way to maintain numbers is to breed enough to compensate for unsuitable animals. If the offspring dies, the mother can breed again sooner; but like I say, I was hoping there was an easy and humane way to get rid of them. It sounds like the answer is no.

Never had an issue with it, where I have to have a large number of animals. All my herd animals breed freely and generally only produce gold offsrping.

Asian elephants are ones I am only struggling to get the numbers up of good females but thats mostly because the gold rated animals have been males....which sell for alot of CCs in franchise.

I've been hard at work building London Zoo in game. Here's the progress so far:

The entirety of 'Into Africa' is now complete with all of its animals accounted for in their respective exhibits. I also built the road that divides the zoo and the canal between the North and South Banks.

Hopefully when this map is finished I will be able to upload it to the workshop but it's far from complete and I've still got the majority of the zoo to build.

 Amazing!

I have a new PC now, one that can play the game. I have finished my North American and Neotropical sections of my zoo already, with Asia coming next. This game is awesome! :D

This is phenomenal, especially the Casson Pavilion and aquarium. I recognised them before I even saw the heading. I can’t wait to see your take on the Mappin Terraces if you get the time.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying to make it as realistic as possible (I'm basing a lot of the fine details on Street View as well as memory from my hundreds of visits). Unfortunately, when building the zoo in game, I managed to make the Mappins a bit too small but I think it's ok.
