Planned Exhibits for 2010 - 2011

I'd rather see cape buffalo, which at least for the places I've been to, are much more rare than Okapi's.

Which is rather funny when you think about their relative status in the wild, when each was "discovered" by Europeans, etc. Perfectly understandable, but it does make me :)

I had not heard of this project. Do you know exactly what the zoo is doing?

The website tells little detail about the carnivore complex, but in the Keeper's Blog it says that the zoo will renvotated the tiger building, including the clouded leopards and they will add sun bears.

While I indeed love okapis, you are correct that Cape buffalo are far more rare in USA zoos. By our count, only 4 major zoos (Busch Gardens, Tulsa, Denver, and SDWAP) have them. The real shame is that Jacksonville WAS the only USA zoo to exhibit all 5 of the famous "Big 5" animals that African safari goers always look for. Now they can't say that anymore.

Do you have a link to the keeper's blog? Also a direct link to the carnivore complex info on the zoo's website?

Yeah, I don't think that's a good trade-off for them.

The Jacksonville zoo has schedule the okapis to be on exhibit starting on Thursday. You are lucky, I wanted to see the okapi, oh well, I can wait a month.

What zoo did these okapi come from?

Yeah, I don't think that's a good trade-off for them.

Nor do I. The buffalo were my main reason for wanting to get to that zoo in the near future. Like someone else said, I love okapis. I can see okapis at two zoos within a couple of hours of here. I'd have to drive to Oklahoma to see the nearest cape buffalo. This further contributes to one of my main fears about zoos these days. In 10 years, with all of the phase-outs, we'll have few reasons to travel across the country to see other zoos. They will all be, more or less, displaying the same species. Same monkeys, same antelope, same reptiles, plus the staple apes, polar bears, pachyderms and big cats. I commend the exhibitry upgrades and feel many are long overdue, but I still get most excited about seeing something I've never seen. Guess I should sock away some cash to go to Africa or India.

I've got two exhibits to add to this list.

Dragons - Cincinnati Zoo June 2010

Children's Zoo Renovation- Cincinnati Zoo- Summer 2010

It's too bad that we have no pics on here from the big new exhibits that have recently opened. Anyone going to Omaha, Columbus, or Brookfield soon?

I'm going to Brookfield this week and will post a review and pics when I get back. I went to Minnesota Zoo last week but the new African exhibits were not yet finished in the Tropics Trail building, they will open in a few weeks. Also, I went to Como Zoo but the Polar Bear Odyssey was not open yet, it will open June 3. It is definitely finished though and I am sure I saw a bear in the enclosure through a gap in the fence. It looks like it will be the best exhibit at that small zoo. I also went to Milwaukee County Zoo - nothing really new there - and will go to Lincoln Park too.

Geomorph, along with snowleopard, I think we'll make you an official zoo correspondent of ZooChat! I wish I could get to as many zoos so often.:)
