Planned Exhibits for 2010 - 2011

Rochester's Seneca Park Zoo - redid their old tiger exhibit to accomodate two Snow Leopard cubs from LA'z zoo.

Buffalo Zoo is opening Heritage Farms this weekend. Their new children zoo focused on animals from the mid 1800's that were seen along the Erie Canal in NY. There is a replica of the Erie Canal with a little boat. Interactive signs and areas for people to pet animals. Animals included are devon milking cow, mule, berkshire pigs, homing pigeons, and their education owl has taken residence in the barn. I think chickens will be added if they are not already there and there will be a few lambs in about a month.

I have just posted 60 pictures of Brookfield Zoo's new Great Bear Wilderness in that gallery. It is a very nice complex, I will write a review of the zoo soon - and what a whopper of a review it will have to be, I was really impressed with the breadth of this collection and exhibit areas!

I understand that the Madagascar exhibit is opening this year. Has anyone seen the Hogle Zoo's arctic exhibit? That zoo needs some updates on their buildings badly. Some of them are straight out of the 70s.

Zoo Atlanta had re-named Carnivore Complex to Trader's Alley which will be home to Tanuki, Sun Bears, Wreathed Hornbills, Sumatran Tigers, and Clouded Leopard. This exhibit will open on June 11.

It is another name for Japanese Raccoon Dogs.

I didn't know that!
Hey, this is really exciting! This will be only the 2nd zoo in North America (Omaha is the other) to display raccoon dogs, and this will be the only zoo to give them an outdoor exhibit. If you've ever seen these animals, they are quite interesting.

Raccoon Dogs are a great species. I wish they were closer, I definitely must see this species. Did Zoo Atlanta renovate their Carnivore Complex for the Asian animals?

I think I was wrong on this. I've been made aware that the Red River Zoo in North Dakota may also have raccoon dogs.

Whoa, wait a minute. What (and where) is Bearizona Wildlife Park??? I assume by the name it is in my home state, but this is the first I have heard of it.

Well, to answer my own question, I found their website. It is in Williams (which is already home to a small walk-thru zoo, the Grand Canyon Deer Farm). Bearizona is a North American themed drive thru, the first one in our state where you drive you own car through the park. Looks like about half the animals arrived this summer (2010) and the other half will be added next summer (2011).

There aren't many actual photos on the site, just drawings, so I have no idea if it will be great or kind of lame (though my intuition leans towards the latter). Suffice to say I am in no rush to make it up there, but will eventually go in conjuction with a Grand Canyon trip.

Ok, this is my last installment on this topic. Found a couple articles and apparently it is operated by the same family that operates Bear Country USA in South Dakota. Has anyone been to that one who can shed some light? Since they are not AZA (I don't think), I am dubious of the quality of the place.

Based on the "experience" offered at the South Dakota operation, you are right to be dubious....

Add to this with an opening of April 2011, the Idaho Aquarium (project formerly called Boise Aquarium)

I've been to Bear Country a few times, and I find most of the exhibits large and fantastic, with the exception of the mountain lion. I've uploaded a few pics in the United States-Other gallery

The California Science Center is not AZA accredited. Is that reason to think poorly of it? I have not been to Bearizona, but I wouldnt judge because it is not AZA. Did you know the Georgia Aquarium failed its first AZA inspection?

Drive-through = dubious. Full stop.

"Herds" of bears exhibited. Beyond dubious.

Zero interpretation; profit motive alone accounts for its existence.
