Hope that's true, would be great if they did.

Sounds dubious to me, no offense to Kiev but I'd imagine that if Australia were going to allow any Platypus export it would be to a collection with a higher international profile... but I could be wrong

Kiev Zoo, Ukraine is a major zoo in the former Soviet bloc, but not well known with regard to cooperative breeding programmes or conservation initiatives. Their elephant bull is highly prized for the EEP Asian elephant, however no portion of EEP assistance to a sub-standard Eastern European zoo has had the desired effect of instigating more cooperation within EAZA.

Another major issue in the former Soviet bloc is the undesirable attentions political advocacy has in zoos which preclude the formulation of scientifically-based masterplans, collection planning and animal management. No funds, firing the capable former zoo director and bringing in a politically adept to zoo management is not exactly the fast way to successful zoo management and animal husbandry.

Importation of a platypus ...? Scientific advisors paid up from the UK, whatever happened to ethical treatment of animals or Australian CITES/Biosecurity rules? Money pays everything ..., how cynical!

The Kiev Zoo does not even have the finance or capability to maintain anything other than its local species under ... conditions, let alone exotics that it has never had any experience of! To me, this is just another ploy by some cynical political figure to steam-roll his influence over an institution he really has no expert knowledge of nor any tangible ties to. Just to keep Ukraine folks happy at his administration ...., yuk!

I would have to say there would definitely be no platypus going to Kiev. There are no platypus outside Australia, have not been for a long time, and will almost certainly not be again for a very long time if ever. A wierd bit of the story is experts coming from the UK to build the enclosure....why would there be any experts in platypus care in the UK??

There is pretty well zero chance that permits would be issued to any Australian facility by DEWHA to export platypus anywhere outside of Australia.

This must either be wishful thinking, or a typo.

By the way, I was shown (by the Zoo Director) the exhibit-in-waiting for platypuses at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo (in the USA). He told me they are actively pursuing platypuses and that he's quite optimistic about it. This was about a year ago. The exhibit is in the famous Kingdoms of the Night noctural complex.

When was the last time a platypus was exhibited outside of Australia? I know they had them in the Bronx in the very early years (pre-war?) and thought they were at London Zoo as well, but John Edwards' book has no photo at least.
