ZOO Plzeň Plzen zoo news

Why is that?

As previously discussed, the animal at Plzen is very geriatric and in poor health, being the last remnant of the former ex-situ captive breeding population.

thank you, and what about kinkajou and slender mongoose?

Bit of a non-sequitur there :D but both are doing entirely fine in the wild.

Sorry, I was not referring to the last ex-situ individual but the recently captured one. I edited my original post.

To the best of my knowledge, the 2023 animal was not permanently taken into captivity after being captured and recorded.

I copied and pasted the link of the link you shared into a few different translators. This logically seems to the most accurate translation, although I could be completely wrong:

"The most endangered Panay cloudrunner (Crateromys heaneyi) was found in Tibiao, Antique.
The Panay cloudrunner is the second largest cloudrat on the island of Panay.
It is difficult to see the Panay Cloudrunner in Sitio Orag kag Madias Mountain.
Kap Española, on the other hand, turned over what was said to be enough for the Municipal tourism of the banwa."

I have no clue what Kap Española is and what was turned over. I suppose they could be referring to land?

I also used translators on a comment to the Facebook post, and got this:

"Turn them over to the conservation and preservation department of DENR since there is no private conservation and preservation organization in Panay!"

But I don't know how much this really means.

Do you have any more sources so that I can read more?

I don't, unfortunately - it was sheer chance that I happened across that report shortly after it was posted, and it doesn't seem to have been reported more widely.

In any case, either the translation is dodgy, or the individual writing the original post wasn't fully educated on the species and its status - it's the only cloudrat species on Panay, so by definition cannot be merely the "second largest" species on the island.

have there been many insitu programmes set up for highly endangered species in more recent times? [like Panay cloudrunner?]
From what I can tell it's gone a bit quiet somehow albeit some prospective plans

I was reading about the clade yesterday and didn't remember another species on the island but I concluded that I must've been misremembering. The results of some translations stated that they are "often" seen in the area of that mountain and with every translator, the translation of the last sentence was never grammatically correct.

Ah well...

Think this user was referring to their previous query about the pacas and jackal being answered.

As for these species above, when I last visited Plzen a year or so ago the kinkajou were in the Amazonia building and the mongoose in the Africa by Night house. Unsure if that’s still the case for either species however

The post is misquoting / re-writing a post from the Panay News Facebook. The original news said that the Panay Cloudrunner is the second largest Cloudrat, and then said that it is the most endangered species of rodent on Panay. The Facebook post you linked was merging the two sentences together.

I’ll be visiting soon, is there anything a first time visitor might need to know? I’m based in Prague.
What are the highlight/rarities?
Is there anything that is easy to miss?

I like everything. A list of most notable things would be welcomed.
Also I’m arriving in Plzen by train, how do I get the zoo? I’ve searched google and there are 2 different trams? I want to die s as much time at the zoo as possible so if I know before I arrive that would be great!

The easiest way to find out which animals you want to see, is to search Plzen (Zoo) at Zootierliste and you check it yourself. There are simply to much species, to make a list here.

One particular one to note is that if you are into birds (and a few small rodents), make sure you get a ticket including the DinoPark. There are a lot of bird species in there, including rarities.

When I've been to Plzen by train I've walked it to the zoo - if you're early enough it's not a bad walk but it would depend on your timings and energy levels..!

That sounds like a good idea. I went on public transport and it took an almost circular route, ending with me walking back to not far from where I boarded. I don't remember any signposts to the zoo.
