New male Barbary* Lion has arrived from Olomouc today (born there in 2010)
*Don't shoot the messenger! I just report the facts![]()
Olomouc is one of the Zoos with the longest history of breeding 'Barbary' Lions, perhaps unbroken since they started with 'Grade 1' Lions from the 1970's selective breeding attempts at recreating the species. So they should be of good 'quality' as far as resembling Barbaries goes, even if not the real thing.
Of which the Longleat ones, the females that Kabir bred with were generic zoo Lions,so the young are of no use to the Barbary Lion breeding program.I think you'll find all (?) the current Barbary Lions in the UK and Northern Ireland are related in some way. PL imported a new female from Madrid in October/November. Belfast's male Lion is the offspring of ex Longleat/Newquay male 'Kabir'. Kabir has offspring at Belfast, PL/Howletts and Longleat.

Indian rhino Manjula might give birth within the next 2-3 weeks. The zoo installed a webcam showing Manjula:

Looks as though the keepers are trying to put the calf on to the Manjula's teat to feed as we speak all on the webcam linked above.
