Very sad news! 26-year-old Male Polar Bear Blizzard has passed away from complications with liver cancer. This also means that for the first time since 1964 (58 years ago), the Point Defiance Zoo is without Polar Bears. It is unknown if Polar Bears will return at this point.

Considering that a polar bear is in the zoo’s logo, I’m sure they’d prefer to keep them as part of the collection. If there aren’t any available to bring in, I guess they’ll have no choice but to convert the exhibit into a grizzly bear exhibit.

Do you guys know if Point Defiance has any plans to get any new polar bears, due to Blizzard's passing, or are they phasing out polar bears in favor of something else?

I’m certain they want more. They just renovated the exhibit I believe. The problem is that they’re incredibly difficult to obtain. Keep an eye on the twin sisters at Detroit, but there are several other zoos who want polar bears too… it’ll all depend on how these next few denning seasons go.
