Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne 2011

The Edinburgh Zoo blog reported that towards the end of 2009 their young female calf from 2008 would be going to a collection in Kent. However it didn't state which zoo that was. At the time it was assumed to be Port Lymphe due to the male at RSCC being her full brother

The two tapirs that went from RSCC to Prague on 26.8.2010 were 1,0 VASAN (3) and 0,1 INDAH (2), they are full sibblings born at Edinburgh.

A bit more information noted from episodes of Roar - Kasih was 6years old when he died of tetanus in 2007 after successfully mating with Lidaeng ( might he have been exchanged for Langkawi ? ) . Male Kopash was born to Lidaeng in 2008 - what happened to him ?

In 2008 wild-caught 16-year old male Kingut was in the woods with 6-year old Malacca whilst Daeng was with female Istana , Lidana was on her own . This would suggest that Kingut is not one of the original males but a more recent arrival .

On the RSCC threads, I believe 'Neofelis' to have been someone managing the RSCC, possibly the owner. They replied on the thread to an enquiry of mine about their tapirs. S/he mentioned that Kingut was 20 and had come from Indonesia. I believe Kingut to be the surviving male from the 2.2 Indonesia import in 1992.

Possibly then Istana was one of the tapirs that arrived from a 'non-EAZA collection', as she was being run with Daeng, father of all the other young females at Port Lympne.

Kopash/Copasih went to Leipzig zoo in October 2010 I believe.

Brown Hyenas

Does anyone know what's happening with the Brown Hyena pups? Will the park be keeping them or moving them on to another collection?

I visited Port Lympne yesterday and noticed three main building works. As has been stated before, there is a new building between the African hunting dog enclosure and Fishing Cat Corner, which appears to have windows looking into the hunting dog enclosure and down the hill to the lion enclosure. Also, what appears to be a new enclosure with a new road to it is located in what is currently the bison paddock. The road starts from Fishing Cat Corner and goes past the margays. The third thing is a new path has been constructed from beside the baboon enclosure going upto The Drive near to the mangabeys. I have put photos of all of these works in the gallery.

I was surprised at how many animals have moved enclosures since my last visit nearly two years ago. Even the free map is now out of date.

The changes around the park are:

1) The Canadian timber wolves now have an enclosure near Livingstone Lodge on the African experience
2) The meerkats have moved to a brand new enclosure opposite the Discovery Zone, also on the African experience
3) Samira the disabled lion is now located at the top of the hill behind the snow leopards where a cheetah was before (what happened to that cheetah?)
4) For the first time, I realised a Scottish wildcat enclosure is above the elephant enclosure by the viewpoint
5) The brown hyaenas are now located where the dholes were, along The Drive
6) The primates and small cats are no longer located near the coatis and lions
7) Iberian wolves are now located along the top path towards the Amur tigers and Milo the lion
8) Binturongs are now located where the red pandas were. Are red pandas still kept at the park, as I didn't see a new enclosure for them?
9) The dholes are down the bottom where the wolves used to be (next to the lions)
10) There was no sign of Calcutta and Delhi the Bengal tigers - are they still there?
11) The picnic area alongside the Bengal tiger enclosure has been cleared, although the toilets are still there
12) There was lots of new fencing and stand-off barriers being erected/already erected and a lot of trees had been cleared

This will be the last time I visit before the park completely changes. It will be interesting to find out what others think of the experience later in the year.

For point 8) There are no longer any red pandas at Port Lympne. They passed away.

Sounds like lots of changes at Port Lympne and idea on what the enclosure by the Bison is designed for?

I looked at your photos. Possibly the new path from Baboons up to Mangabeys will be the Eastern boundary of the 'Pedestrian' 100 acres? I wonder if the footpath below this, past the Gorilla outdoor enclosures and up to the baboons will remain open after the changes- presumably so.

1) seems a strange place to put Canadian wolves! Maybe it is just a temporary location for them. I could understand it if they transferred the rest of the African Hunting Dogs over there.

I remember when these 'black wolves' were treated as an important group for PL due to the bloodline....now the Iberian wolves are breeding, its almost as if this group are no longer wanted and have been moved to a more remote park of the site. At least they are still maintaining the group albeit in retirement.

A sensible move regarding the Meerkats in my opinion. I never understood why Port Lympne imported such a 'commercial' species if they just going to stick them in an enclosure that a great deal of the visitors wouldnt reach.

The Timber Wolves were on the African Experiance back in July if I remember correctly aswell (well, there were wolves of some sort there anyway). I agree that some Hunting Dogs would be a more theme appropriate species but yet again, the African Experiance is hardly known for sticking to African fauna.

Didn't the enclosure currently housing the timber wolves used to house a breeding pair of hunting dogs?

I believe there is/was a large pack of Hunting Dogs in an enclosure in this area- I don't know the exact layout of that area though. It was advertised as one of the sights to see on the 'Safari', especially before/at feeding time. No idea what current setup is though.

There is a enclosure with a pair I think of hunting dogs on the far right of the safari drive through quiet a large enclosure as well.

Yes, the two enclosures are separate. Sorry, I didn't explain the position of the timber wolf enclosure very well. It is on the right hand side after the security gate into the Livingstone Lodge area (Discovery Zone, shop, toilets etc.) and can only be seen properly from the trucks. The enclosure appeared quite large, with a dell in the middle of it, and I saw four wolves in it. I don't recall seeing anything there when I previously visited.

As has been said, the hunting dog enclosure is prior to this, also on the right hand side of the road.

When I visited in the summer both Hunting Dogs and Wolf were on the African experience. Hunting dogs on the far right of the African experience and the Wolf right at the top of the experience in the enclosure on the right hand side of the Livingstone lodge. It may not fit geographically but it certainly makes a good wolf enclosure.

So do Iberian wolves occupy both large wooded enclosures by the zoo entrance? Is the third (adjacent to the left-hand one and nearest the lions/tigers) also home to Iberian wolves or is it still home to a pair of hunting dogs?

When I visited in August the Iberian wolves had both enclosures to the left of the path from the entrance towards the lions. The smaller one nearer the lions can also be viewed if you turn left on to the formal path to the top of the steps.

thanks, thats interesting. So what lives in the large wooded enclosure to the right of the path these days? Is there still a group of 'black' timber wolves in there?

No enclosure there now, just a fancy hut set back from the path which I guess is for school parties (I saw a lot of kiddies' drawings pinned up inside).
