Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne 2012

They have bred more than this- at least three/four young since the original group of 5/6-including the castrated younger male- came from Stuttgart. The young have mostly been females too, but I am not sure what they are doing about future breeding e.g. splitting the group to prevent inbreeding(which may have happened already) or starting a second one, or sending more of the young elsewhere.

The original group arrived in 2005 from Stuttgart, the original group was;

'Gorbi' - breeding male born 4th November 1991
'Bibundi' - breeding female born 23rd December 1997
'Kassalo' - castrated (By Stuttgart) male born 16th November 2001
'Kaduna' - daughter of Gorbi and Bibundi born 1st October 2004

As well as another female daughter who has since left for Europe. The first offspring for nearly fourty years in the UK was 'Afi' born in 2006 and Bibundi had another female (?) in 2007/08.

The births at PL are;
2006 0.1 'Afi' (Bibundi x Gorbi)
2008 0.1 '(?) (Bibundi x Gorbi) - This is Bibundi's third baby

I still think there have been more than just these two births.

Drills can live up to 28 years old. Gorbi is 19 and Bibundi 14 so there not exactly 'spring chickens':p I think they may have had one or two not successful births but I don't know/think PL announced it.

I think there hope now lies with bringing in another male so they have two (Three?) breeding females to breed from, maybe moving Gorbi and Kassalo to another exhibit/collection and bringing a new male in.

I am very sure that Gorbi and Bibundi raised more then just 2 young in P.L., too.

I can only find the births of the two which I have mentioned, so if there's anything online could somebody please post it? It would help all the confusion. :)

I think you will find after the first couple of successful births at PL that they stopped publicising them as 'news'.

What makes people think there have been more? Did you see more on visits, or read it somewhere?

I have been interested in this group and have checked their progress on ISIS from time to time, and have to say ISIS at least never recorded more than two births since they arrived.

Right, which essentially confirms that only two births are known about at Port Lympne, the first beign Afi in 2006 and then a second female in 2008. The daughter of Bibundi that was sent away was not born at PL. I am assuming that the 2.5 Pertinax mentioned in his comment beneath the photo was a figure prior to one of the daughters leaving the park.

Does anyone know if there was a period of time after the 2008 birth before one of the older daughters left PL?

Is there any plans of breeding the African Elephants at Port lympne ?? Also any news from the Black Rhino's??

Note my shot of the list of the drills on the cage from July 2009 and the comments on it.

Pretty sure the names list had not been updated here...I think my last visit was in 2009 also and Bibundi had another small (under six months) baby with her, while the eldest daughter (in the group) was showing sign of a swelling. So unless they have contracepted them I would expect at least one more by now.

I wasn't including her in the PL births..;) And yes, they would have listed 2.5 after the first two births at PL, then the eldest non-PL bred one left making it 2.4. Its a pity we currently(?)can't access ISIS to see what they list now.

I can't find the reference to '2.5' that I made
click on the photo above (post #33 by gentle lemur) and it takes you to the thread for that photo, in which you said 2.5 :)

ah, I see- I was quoting the number ISIS listed (2.5) after 0.2 were born at PL, so that would have been correct as was the figure of 2.3 originally imported.

The last EAZA Yearbook covering the 2 years 2007 to 2008 shows PL having 2.4 at the start of 2007 , with 0.2 births and 0.1 departure , leaving 2.5 at end of 2008 . This implies that there have been further births in the group .
