Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne 2025

Interesting. Do you have a reference for this please? I’d be very interested to know how many and when their first breeding was
According to the studbook for the species, there were a total of 6 (1.5) black rhinoceros births at London Zoo:

Launa/Lisa (0:1) London - 1969 - Paul x June
Joanna (0:1) London - 1972 - Paul x June
Noelle (0:1) London - 1975 - Bwana Mkubwa/Fred x June
Kes (1:0) London - 1978 - Bwana Mkubwa/Fred x June
Esther (0:1) London - 1982 - Bwana Mkubwa/Fred x June
Rosie (0:1) London - 1988 - Bwana Mkubwa/Fred x Mama Kidogo/Stumpy

There was also a male calf born at Port Lympne in 1991, to Basha and June that would've been conceived at London Zoo, but the calf DNS.

Some of these died young while others were successfully raised at London but then died before reaching maturity at other zoos e.g. Kes went to Marwell with his halfsister Katie, born at Whipsnade(same sire) but they both died before breeding. Rosie was by far the longest-lived of any of them. She spent many years at Chester before going to PL, but her handraised background made her incompatable with other rhinos so breeding was impossible.

It's Mlimba and she's transferred to Ree Park Safari in Denmark.

The female (who's apparently been put down), is therefore 'Solio' - born 2001.
Get the facts right first thing!

The cow in end-of-life care was Rosie. She was put down 3 days ago.

BTW: Honestly, it is high time the Port Lympne herd restarts ex situ breeding once more.

A member mentioned the rhino that would be PTS was Mlimba's mother, hence the confusion. Sad that it was Rosie in the end, but she did achieve a great age of 36 years.

Not to nit pick, but if you read their comment, they didn't say that at all. You took their comment to imply it was mother died, daughter moved, but it wasn't actually what they said.

They were very active when I went last week. I'm not usually an ape fan tbh but we stopped next to them to have some lunch and they put on a very good show, climbing up high for bedding and dragging it down to where they wanted it. They weren't in the 'outside' bit, but the 'inside' area.

That's good to hear :)
