Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne Wild Animal Park News 2024

I take it you are referring to the Orangutans here, not the maned wolves...there is plenty of space in that enclosure to seperate them if need be but at present they obviously need/rely on each other's company. I presume they are living in the simple'pavilion' that is nearest the large outdoor area, which they will have access to in due course. The previous male gorillas have moved down to the roundhouse enclosure where the last of the older bachelor males, Djimu. was living on his own.

Whereabouts are the Maned Wolves?

Yes my apologies for not sounding clearer I did mean the Orangutans have the option of being separated if it came to it. The remaining gorillas are now in the roundhouse however how many that are in there I can't say as only 2 was spotted. The maned wolfs are down in the enclosure past the cheetahs at the bottom of the hill ( I think it used to be the hyenas in there but may be wrong)

Ah ok that makes more sense, their website says in the rhino encounter summary that they have White, Black and GOH but they only show Black on the animal list and map.
That is correct, they have a bunch of black rhinos about the park, as well as two or three male southern white rhino currently held in the old elephant paddocks, and a single male Indian rhino called Orys who is currently off-display.

I knew about the offshow Indian Rhino, and of course the Black Rhino, but had no idea that PL kept White Rhinos even though a glance at ZTL indicates that they have been at the collection since 2019! Strange that they haven’t been added to the zoo’s map in those five years, and whereabouts are the old elephant paddocks that you mention? Where did the White and Indian Rhinos come from and why did the collection acquire them?

The Indian Rhino is a surplus male from Basel. The EEP was (and is still is) desperate for new holders for them. So it's likely they will be acquiring more in the future

The White Rhinos are two young males, from Colchester and Dublin

Thank you. It’s great to have a UK zoo with three species of rhino, as such large numbers of species from a particular group seem to be a thing of the past, although I cannot help but find it odd that an owner so keen on preventing zoos as a whole is actively expanding his collection, with two species of rhino, bears and orangutans all arriving in the past few years…

I'm glad they have (finally!) decided to go into Indian Rhino. For years it was one of the most requested acquisitions on this forum. I wonder if they will go in those big marshy paddocks on the south side of the site (where the buffalo were once held) which, again, was often suggested on this site.

Sorry to break up the convo, but can anyone tell me if Port Lympne have any birds. I know their mammal collection is impressive, but am not clued up on the rest of their collection.

It must be pretty impressive to see three species of rhino in any collection, is it the only zoo in the UK with that status currently as I can't think of anywhere else off the top of my head. Definitely worth a visit.

I believe they’re the only zoo in Europe full stop with all three…
Any in the US? Off the top of my head I don’t think there are any black rhino at San Diego WAP, but could be wrong.

For a while I believe you could see three species at Cincinnati, and four at white oak which I believe was only the second zoo after London to ever display four at a time.

I don't know about the US, though I think San Diego does have three species of rhino, but here in Australia, Taronga Western Plains Zoo does.

A lot more suitable for them. Its an ideal area really. Far more suitable than the hilly paddocks where the Elephant barns are situated, though I don't know exactly where the single Indian bull is currently being kept.

Yes, it would be the perfect enclosure for them. Up by the old elephants is rather exposed, but the other Rhino's don't seem to mind!

But yes, would be interesting to know where off show they're currently being held for reference.

As a side note, I never really understood why the elephants were ever kept up there. The area is exposed and the paddocks hilly. Always thought they should have been kept in the large enclosure that the bison are (were?) kept in in the middle of the site, adjacent to the deer "park"
