Orphaned beavers released in rewilding project

Two orphaned beavers have been given a new home in a rewilding enclosure in Devon.

The male and female, who were rescued from culling in Scotland, have been settling in at Poole Farm, Plymouth, for four weeks and have already begun to transform the landscape.

This is the second time that beavers have been introduced to Poole Farm, after a previous pair escaped due to storm damage and one was killed by a car.

Plymouth City Council said it had since reinforced the enclosure to prevent further incidents.

Lundy Island wild bird numbers soar

Bird populations have soared on Lundy Island with some 40,000 rare seabirds thriving on its shores, said the RSPB.

The island in the Bristol Channel is home to 95% of England's breeding Manx Shearwaters, a species that was once on the brink of extinction on Lundy.

Thanks to a project that eradicated rats from the island in 2006, the Shearwater population has soared from about 600 in 2001 to more than 25,000.

Puffins have increased in number from 13 in the year 2000 to 1,335 in 2023

Celebrating Birds and Their Habitats Conserved in 2023: Reversing Bird Population Declines

A Look Back at American Bird Conservancy’s Results in Reversing Bird Population Declines This Year

The massive loss of migratory birds requires a huge response, and that's what ABC accomplishes through our BirdScapes approach. Working with a network of partners across the United States and into Latin America and the Caribbean, ABC implements conservation across core breeding, stopover, and wintering areas for priority species. To date, we have defined 100 BirdScapes and undertaken conservation action in 45 of them. Working closely with the Migratory Bird Joint Ventures (JVs) and other partners, we have together positively impacted 9.3 million acres of habitat for declining bird species, including the Cerulean Warbler and Western Meadowlark.

Celebrating Birds and Their Habitats Conserved in 2023: Reducing Threats and Building the Bird Conservation Movement

A Look Back at ABC’s Results in Reducing Threats to Birds and Building the Bird Conservation Movement This Year

ABC is committed to addressing key threats to birds so that habitats are healthier and more safe. Working with policymakers, partner groups, and the private sector, we develop and implement solutions to large-scale causes of bird mortality, along with precedent-setting or critical regional bird problems. Our tactics include advocacy, grassroots outreach, the development of new technologies, and – if a problem can't be resolved in any other way – legal action.
