There have been record increases in populations of both Galapagos penguins and flightless cormorants in the Galapagos Islands, recent records have shown.

The cormorant population has reached its highest level since records began in 1977 and penguins their highest population since 2006. The population of penguins increased from 1,451 in 2019 to 1,940 in 2020. Over the same period, the cormorant population grew from 1,914 to 2,220.

Two possible reasons for this increase is the recent La Nina climatic phenomenon, which has increased food availability for the birds, and the coronavirus pandemic which reduced nest disturbance due to a drop in tourism.
