Possible Species for Monarto Safari Park ( Speculation )

I believe they're also bred to be hunted on some ranches, so that may also be reflected in this statistic.

That's good news!, they would be easy to acquire. As much as hunting endangered animals goes against preserving them. Breeding for hunting does actually create large sustainable populations.

It amazes me the lack of interest within the major zoos with some species within its collections its like ok we might do the bare minimum, The Bongos in Australia could of been much better handled it just comes across as if they can't be bothered to make any real effort. From what I recall the first calf born in oz was a female and then exported (a mistake) from there as I recall only males were born and placed within other collections. Then when it appeared they were really going nowhere with them imported a female (that allegedly had a health problem) that never bred.Additional imports should of happened and not trying to maintain any species starting from just one pair.

I honestly think it's also to do with our zoos being more concerned with cafe's, kids play areas and event areas. The actual space relegated to these things and away from actual animal exhibits is astounding.

Taronga has two high ropes courses for kids, but can't manage to keep any species of gibbon. Melbourne if im remembering correctly just put Nyala in an exhibit they phased Bongo out of because one had a freak accident and the exhibit wasn't safe. Management at some of our majour zoos have just ran them into the ground collection wise.

It was actually the former Malayan Tapir enclosure of which the female Nyala currently reside in. The former Bongo exhibit sits empty (and has for seven ish years) !

I thought I may have gotten that incorrect!:D
However, Melbourne still could have continued with bongo. Maybe with more zoos we may have seen more of an effort for importation.

From what I can recall the former female Bongo ran into a fence and that seems to of been the end of Bongos at Melbourne zoo. One problem and its all over

Exactly, seemed like a little bit too much of a cautious move considering there can easily be precautions taken to prevent an incident like this from happening again.

Additionally, there's also no reason they can't be displayed at Werribee if a city zoo is deemed inadequate for them!

It is a move that makes no sense.
They didn't phase out elephants when man jai died, or gorillas when Julia got the **** kicked out of her and kicked the bucket from Otana.

Realistically if they needed another exhibit, mixing bongo with the giraffe would make for a better exhibit then zebra and giraffe. The zoo isnt exactly sticking to a geographical theme, so it wouldn't have mattered. If they had kept the species, we may have seen imports by now.

I personally think they should lean further into predatory animals outside of Africa, because the only ones they have currently are the Tasmanian devils, which don't get me wrong are still brilliant, but they could at the very least get some kind of dhole or wild Dog.

I too would like to see Monarto diversify this collection to incorporate other continents (across all other species). Asia is a well represented continent regionally, with many species supported by the region.

Monarto’s masterplan advises their collection will be remaining Africa centric long term, with close to a decade of projects to progress through. However long term, I’m hopeful they would consider an Asian precinct on an epic scale. This could even take the form of a drive through night safari, which would be a unique experience within Australasia.

My night safari wish list (phase one):

Sumatran tiger
Sri Lankan leopard
Sloth bear
Clouded leopard (walking trail)
Fishing cat (walking trail)
Binturong (walking trail)
Asian elephant
Indian rhinoceros
Deer species (any)
