What about Switzerland? May vaccinated tourists of this country also visit the Czech republic without testing?

Unfortunately, Switzerland is in "light red" status right now. It means tourists are allowed in, BUT
- they need to fulfill a questionaire and send it to public health office before arrival
- if they come by public transport (train, bus, plane) they need to show a negative PCR or antigen test at border
- they need to self-isolate after arrival and can leave isolation only after negative PCR test done here in Czechia
- vaccination done in Switzerland is not considered valid at all and can´t be used instead of tests

So a lot of hassle and probably not worth it.

The zoo has sent a 2-years old wisent cow Prixi to TP Berlin. She should be part of a group that will be sent to Azerbaijan in few months and released to national park Shadag there.

Current situation on covid front - most of animal pavilions are still closed, only 6 open. All indoor public spaces (shops, airport, public transport..) still need you to wear a mask and this rule will probably stay whole summer. Some activities and spaces are stil banned (clubs, disco halls, music bars..), thus night life is very limited in Prague.

Starting on Monday 21th June, vaccination certificates of people from EU/Norway/Iceland/Switzerland/Serbia are valid here now (22 days after first dose) for everything, you can freely cross border or enter local restaurant or hotel without any tests. Just like you would before this pandemia.

There is/will be reconstruction of nocturnal part of Indonesian jungle and it seems, that after it will come new inhabitants - pangolins (there were speculations about them in new gorilla house in past, this makes more sense, at east geographically)

The zoo received additional 4 Austral Parakeets (Enicognathus ferrugineus ferrugineus) from parrot zoo Bošovice, in aim to increase the size of its own flock.
Loading of birds into a car in front of Bošovice zoo.

Info to potential zoo visitors:
- currently closed are following exhibits: lemur walk-through island, Sechuan bird house, gharial house, Indonesian jungle (due to reconstruction of night section), bald ibis aviary.

Also 2020 annual report is out
Have anybody some actual info about new polar bear area? (AR mentions, that it would be more costly than at first planned...)

The zoo went to the town hall to secure some invetment funds. Tawn hall promissed to send next year -
  • 0,6 mio Euro for a large wisent pen to be constructed in forest in NE suburbs of Prague.
  • 0.8 mio for an aviary for highland Asian birds (near Secuan house).
  • And 1.8 mio for modernisation of current Bactrian camel enclosure to look nicer and be able to keep wild camels in. But don´t keep your breath, the zoo has published and then scraped so many plans for new species that we should expect just domestic camels to continue to live there after this modernisation.

The wisent project is a planned for rewilding project?

The wisent project is a planned for rewilding project?

Yes, you could say so. A piece of unused land in Dolní Počernice (near frequented highway) owned by the town hall should be "rewilded". Former fields and vineyard, used in recent times to store waste material from construction activity and sludge from cleaned fish ponds, should get transformed into green forest-steppe areal that would also be attractive to local families to visit. Wisents should probably help to prevent the land to be fully covered by trees (which it would naturally) so they will live there in a pen.

I looked through the posts and couldn't find an update of Richard after he caught covid earlier in the year. Does anybody know if he's OK. I apologize if it has been posted already.

All animals that were covid positive are now clear and ok, zoo is now thinking about vaccinating some of the species as well.

Most pavilions are open to visitors now. The only remaining closed places in the whole zoo are lemur walk-through island and Indonesian jungle and won´t reopen till at least year-end.

List of July offspring is out. No first-time breeding, all regularly bred species. Babies:
Star tortoise, white-crested laughingthrush, Chacoan peccary, Visayan hornbill, scaly-breasted lorikeet, glossy ibis, rufous-cheeked laughingthrush, common hill myna, hadada ibis, pied avocet, Baer's pochard, golden-crested myna, D'Albertis' python, Turner's thick-toed gecko, common wondergecko, sable antelope (female named Klárka), western New Guinea stream turtle, smew, pink-necked green pigeon, Luzon hornbill, dice snake, common chaffinch, Egyptian fruit bat, red-tailed amazon, secretary bird, African openbill, Sumatran laughingthrus, wonga pigeon.

Vienna sent one yellow-billed amazon. And Plzen sent two Javan rusa females but one died soon it seems.

The zoo bred Hartlaub's ducks for the first time, 7 ducklings.

The goverment has scraped covid-related limits on number of people indoors in zoos. This eliminated any possible queues in front of animal houses on very busy days.

The zoo announced that echidna puggle ´s weight is 770g, has been named Vrána (name of a Czech hockey player) and will be weighted every Sunday 14:30 in the Darwin´s crater house - first date is 29th August. Visitors are invited to observe process through glass wall.

In other news, Czech goverment now allows vaccinated tourists from all countries to enter the country. You need full vaccination (+14 days old) by any vaccine approved by EU or WHO. This includes tourists from the UK, the US, India etc. No tests or quarantine needed.
