Prigen have now publicly give details on their Bawean pigs, which reportedly their numbers are around 500 in their endemic Bawean. The species itself has not yet been widely recognized yet.
In PCBA, they have three pigs that had originally arrived after getting caught in a snare in and were then sent to Prigen by BKSDA for conservational purposes, likely to be the first pigs shipped out from Bawean. Aside from establishing a eks situ population, fear of African swine fever (ASF) sweeping Bawean and eradicating these pigs are also considered. To support the breeding project, a 2.500 m2 complex has been built for up to be five breeding groups.
PCBA of Taman Safari Indonesia on Instagram: "Have you heard of the Bawean Warty Pig (Sus blouchi)? If you havent that's fine, very few people know that one of the worlds most threatend wild pig species even exists. Endemic to the island of Bawean, between East Java and Borneo, only about 500 indivuals are thought to exist. Even worse than the low population numbers is the looming threat of African Swine Fever (ASF) a deadly viral desease that can erradicate whole populations of asian wild pigs within a very short time. The Bawean Warty Pig might well be the worlds most vulerable pig species at the moment, being the only wild pig confined to only one population without subpopulation devisions. This means, should the ASF virus reach Bawean the Warty Pig might be erradicated within weeks. To prevent the extinction of Bawean Warty Pig it is urgently necessary to establish a safe ex-situ population to function as back-up in case the ASF virus reaches Bawean. Initial breeding groups of Bawean Warty Pigs in human care are being established at TSI-PCBA. So far we have received three individuals, all three had fallen victim to illegal snare traps and were rescued by @bbksda_jatim_official and entrusted to us for conservation breeding. These three Bawean Warty Pigs might well be the first to travel off the species home island, all to help safe their species. To accomodate a growing ex-situ population of the species we built, supported by @zootierdesjahres and @zgap_e.v, a dedicated enclosure complex providing 2.500m2 for up to 5 breeding groups. #wartypig #babikutil #konservasi #wildpig #conservation"
