Sorry, I have never seen the actual individual. Are there any pictures of the seriemas?
Are other birds like bishops and weavers being bred privately and sold to different facilities?
アカノガンモドキ | 鳥のいるカフェHi!
I visited Moff Animal Cafe Lalaport AIchi Togo this month, and was able to meet the Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata)! It is probably the only animal in Japan, and could be the only in East Asia.
This seems to be the same individual that was in the Tori No Iru Cafe in the past.アカノガンモドキ | 鳥のいるカフェ
Tori Cafe sold one back in 2020, so this could mean that seriemas still roam around Japan's private bird trade.
Tori Cafe did sell and keep toucanets and red billed hornbills before. Burden may have sold some rare birds in the past. Another animal distributor I found is Petsun, which has sold curassows and black cockatoos in the past. But their website doesn’t have a proper filter for the animals they sell, so the only birds I saw them selling recently so far are parrots and finches. Are there specific or really hidden websites where I could find rare birds in Japan like curassows and whydahs in private hands? There are several individuals on X keeping rare birds like toucanets and red-billed hornbills in private hands, and I would like to know where they got them.

A quote from one of my favourite books of all time, Life of Pi, sums up what I’ve seen on these websites.Hi
I used to work in that industry in Japan.
Basically, there are a few major animal trading companies that import and distribute exotic birds.
Here's one of the famous companies.
エキゾチックアニマル専門店|BURDEN RETAIL
As you can see, it lists owl, hawk, etc to sell to private hands. But, this is only the surface. These companies will also have a "hidden list" for enthusiasts who directly contact the company. They will also import birds based on special orders.
Also, places like animal cafes sell exotic birds too.

To be honest, I really don't like how they are selling these animals, and I feel Japan needs stricter laws to keep these birds.
