Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park Progress on Lowry Park's bonobo exhibit?

I stopped by the zoo this past Saturday. I asked a keeper in the primate area if she could tell me what was going to be in the habitat, but she said she was not able to say as it has not generally been announced.

The area past the orangutans on that side and past the restroom cave on the other side is now blocked off. I took a picture from the viewing area between the lemurs and siamang:

As you can see, there is some scaffolding, and the sidewalk is all broken up. Otherwise it seems the area for the animals hasn't had much work as you can see the "termite mound" still.

Update on progress, not a lot to see. From the picture you can tell they either redid or cleaned the concrete wall in the front of the enclosure, but that is all the visible progress.

You can see that wood pilings and an overhang/roof have been added to presumably support plexiglass. At this point I am thinking they very well may be going forward with the bonobo's. I am not sure what other species would require a barrier like that, they did not even have that for the chimps, but if they are expanding the climbing structure then they may be needed.

What’s the status report on this exhibit?

Most of the facilities that currently house bonobos are at, or exceed, their maximum reported holding space. It would be nice to have another holding facility, or possibly even another breeding facility, for bonobos.

Having another housing facility would allow places like Milwaukee, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Jacksonville to produce more offspring. (Milwaukee’s females are some of the most represented females in the entire global population.)

It's a quite sizable primate species that is a heck of a climber lol
I do but not at liberty to say. I can say it's an African species

Black-crested Mangabeys? Or possibly mandrill? These are the only species I know of that are present in AZA zoos and likely fit your criteria, unless by African species you mean from Madagscar and it's Coquerel's Sifaka?

I believe the zoo already has mandrills.

Finally the official announcement via email:

Also in March, check out a new species joining our popular Primate Realm, hamadryas baboons! This unique member of the Old World monkey family was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians and a representative of their god of learning. The group of six, who came to ZooTampa from New York's Prospect Park Zoo, will live in a sprawling, fully remodeled habitat featuring expansive viewing windows

So wait a minute, what will go into the baboon habitat at Prospect Park? Isn't that all of their troop?
