I'm looking for infomation on Puan the Orangutan (Born 1953 and kept at Perth Zoo)
I know she had 11 offspring, but only 3 remain at Perth Zoo.
Does anyone have any infomation on where the rest were sent?
Or the other Orangutans that are no longer here?

Puluh at Chester is one.

Pusung died a couple of years ago. Can't remember if he was at Adelaide.

Edit - he was at Adelaide, died of a respiratory infection

I know that her offspring are Puluh (now at Chester), Pusung (died at Adelaide), Puspa (currently at Adelaide) and Pulang (still at Perth), with a few more that I can't remember.

Thanks so much for that infomation. If anyone else knows more, I would appreciate the infomation.
Yes, Puan is still alive and well (I saw her at the Zoo yesterday). A total of three of her offspring, (all female) remain in Perth- Puteri (12Jun1970), Punya (5Jun1981) and Pulang (21Dec1993).

Some of the other offspring of Puan;

Ist birth( details unknown, but died at six months) in Johore private zoo before coming to Perth.
M. Puntjak. (Perth 3). born 24.3.72. Went to Adelaide? (died there?)
M. (Perth 6) born 25.2.74. died March 74.
F. Puspa(Perth 8) born 30.1. 75. sent to Adelaide.
F. Puas(Perth 11) born 9.12.76. died 16.6.78.

No data until 1981; F. Punya.

Not a complete list, but Perth originally imported, on 31.12.68, one male(Atjeh) and three females (Binte, Puan & Mawas). very first birth at Perth(Perth 1) was Puteri(to Puan x Atjeh) The missing Perth numbers inbetween those listed are births to Binte or Mawas, not Puan.

The short birth intervals were because Puan's first six infants had to be removed for handraising due to a Strongyloides parasitic infestation Puan carried, which could be treated in the infants but was untreatable in Puan herself until a method was discovered in 1980. That allowed her next infant Punya, to be mother-raised and she stayed with Puan almost 10 years.

I think she's 58 this year. She's also a great grandmother.

It'd be interesting to know how many grandchildren/great grandchildren she has.

At Chester she has
1 grandson, 3 grand-daughters
Prague
1 grandson
Budapest
1 grand-daughter
1 great grand-daughter

I didn't even know about Binte or Mawas. Are they related to Puan in any way?

Nor did I till I looked in the old Studbook I have.;)

No relationship afaik- Mawas; wildborn estimated birthdate 1944.
Binte; wildborn estimated birthdate 1960.

'Puan' came from the Sultan of Johore's private Zoo, probably the others did too.

All four animals were still alive in 1980, at which time Perth also had four of Puan's offspring (Puteri, Puntjak, Puspa and Pusung), three of Binte's(f.Bintang Baratu, f.Binar, f.Bini) one from Mawas(m.Majizat) and one incestuously- 'f.Perth 13'- from Atjeh x Bintang Baratu.

I don't know what happened to any of the other females' offspring.

At the same time they also had the hybrid male 'Bobby' born Sydney 1964. So in 1980 Perth had a grand total of 14 Orangutans! (13 Sumatran, 1 hybrid)

Wow so apart from the Chester 6 she has surprisingly few other living grand-children. So she's not as well represented as you would think.

It often happens. A very productive female with many offspring, but only some of those themselves breeding into future generations.

She also has 3 Grand-children In Perth Zoo. One of them could be considered inbred Utama 19.6.1979(PuteriXAtieh) Though apparently it was unintentional.

Also she has a Great-Grand-Child in Perth.

Hopefully means there is slightly less likelihood of stopping Puluh from having any more, if 10 other children of Puan were as prolific there could have been 60 grandchildren of Puan in the captive population! Not sure how represented Subis/Emma's genes are though.

Yes, he's had 4 daughters and 2 sons. The oldest have moved to Prague (m) and Budapest (f) and the female in Budapest has one daughter.

Emma and Subis are sisters and mothers of 3 of the offspring each.

It would be interesting to know what happened to all the offspring of the two other females Binte and Mawas that came to Perth along with Puan and Atjeh. There were quite a few and none of them seem to have gone to other Australian Zoos.

Yeah, I would like to know what happened to the Offspring of Binte and Mawas. Hopefully more infomation about them will appear.
Were any of Puan's Offspring sent to other places in Australia?
If so, where?
And what ever happened to Atjeh(Before he died)?
