Do most public aquariums feed their sharks, bony fish, inverts, and sea turtles on a near-daily basis? I know some have feeding time six days a week. As animals with slow metabolisms, is it really necessary to feed them that often? I’ve seen plenty of obese sand tiger sharks and green sea turtles, so it can’t be good for the animals. Daily feeding should also be a drain on the food budget as well as the tank filters.
As humans we seem biased towards feeding animals such as snakes, frogs, and turtles, often even if it’s healthier for them not to eat so much. Even some high-metabolism mammals such as lions can go a week without eating if they fail to catch prey; is it really best for their metabolisms to eat daily, or would every other day suffice?
