Public Kakapo-chick-raising facility

ooh, that is exciting news! It will certainly make it a little easier for anyone planning a trip to NZ to coincide with seeing a kakapo :p

Good idea but its a long trip down to Invercargill though- its the 'city at the end of the World'...

That's a rather misleading title, though!

Is this facility still open?
It never was open. The article is about a proposal.

The rearing was at that time done in a non-public building. In 2016 there was a (temporary) public rearing facility set up in Invercargill. There are not kakapo chicks every year, so that was a one-off.

The Southland Museum is currently closed due to earthquake safety concerns (although the Tuatarium can still be viewed through windows from outside the building) but there is hope that a redevelopment can include a kakapo facility where the chicks can be seen during breeding seasons.
