Africa alone isn’t the worst of Ueno. There are the monkey exhibits, small elephant and bison enclosures, and the bear enclosures which cover the entire East garden.

I wouldn’t have spent six years on a remote insular wildlife refuge if I weren't interested in watching wildlife. ;). I have an old contact who might help me see Pteropus dasymallus in the wild.:D

I've seen live tuna fish in other public aquaria.

Those enclosures you have to past to get to the reptile house.
 
So, the dice is cast: my wife and I have booked the flight to Osaka for 2022 for our 8 days trip to Japan. Current itinerary:
- Osaka: visit of the local aquarium and the various food / shopping options. I hope to get interesting memorabilia to be used as exhibits at WdG and will, for that very purpose, also try some fugu.
- A day trip to Toba Aquarium
- A few days will be spent on Yakushima island hiking, watching the local fauna (among others, the local macaque subspecies and maybe even nesting seaturtles) and enjoying the "Princess Mononoke" setting.
Maybe I'll get a good Japanese cooking knife (I quite like good knives). ^^

Any other suggestions?
 
I only have a joke suggestion and that is to go to Shiga to take a picture of the atrocity known as the Horii zoo and maybe the location they opened using loopholes.

One actual suggestion I have is to try takoyaki (that is if you don’t object to the idea of eating octopi). When I went to Osaka with my mom we were told that takoyaki is the best around their and let me tell you, it may be one if my if not my favorite street food.

Yes.(the food part not the Horii zoo part). Also just try the seafood and all the fruit available.

Thanks. I can't count how many times takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu and yakiniku have been recommended to me for Osaka. ^^
I'm surprised no one has yet made a remark regarding my Yakushima choice. I'm probably the only visitor who is looking forward to encountering the local mamushi, tiger keelback snake, Japanese toad, sea snakes and the Giant Asian Hornet there. ^^
