Taronga Zoo Pygmy hippo birth

Hey, I know they're not pygmy hippos :D but golden agoutis (or red rumped agoutis as ISIS prefers to call them) are a good example of a species which is derived from very few founders; in this case four which arrived at Adelaide zoo in 1949. Over 200 young were bred during the next four decades (about a quarter of which died) and were distributed across Australia and New Zealand, and exported to Asia. Now unfortunately they are just about gone - 28 left in N.Z. and just 12 in Aust.

Other species still going strong after deriving from just a handful of founders are Barbary sheep and Himalayan tahrs.
 
That's nice, and will Melbourne be in the process of obtaining a certain young male to eventually create a further breeding pair?
 
It's great to think that melbourne will have a breeding pair!! And the hippo exhibit I think is quite good. And who wouldn't love to see a cute little baby pygmy hippo! Monifa looked so adorable.

Don't jump the gun dragon, I was asking if Melbourne would be in the process of getting a breeding pair, not saying that they will.

...haven't heard about another male to pair up with the female. But I understand the Taronga infant is coming to Melbourne. (I think that was always the deal from the beginning....Timmy was to go to Sydney and Melbourne would receive any offspring.)

Besides, she's just a baby.....too early for matchmaking.
 
Yrue she is a bit young yet, just hoping that all will go well and in a few years (how many before she is old enough?) there will be another generation.:D
 
Just wondering she is in great health now right? Cause I know there were some major problems in the beginning.
 
I herd that there IS another hipo at Tipperary. A bloke I know was teling me that his brother works there and spent a lot of the dry season fighting fires. He was telling me that he is planning to visit and there is even a pygmy hipo in a billabong there. I was suprised to hear that and asked if he was sure as I had heard that rumour before. He believes his brother has seen it.

There is a story there waiting to be told Monty!

But the people involved can't tell the story without it reflecting badly on themselves.
 
Well okay .. Steve. Perhaps you can reveal this to us then? ;)

Perhaps there is a slight notion of a resurgence of pygmy hippo out there in Oz! :D
 
G'day jelle - to go further would be to open a big can of worms and this may not be the time or the place to do so.

The ramifications involve government agencies as well as private individuals.

The animal welfare implications, as well as the present loss of this animal to the Australian population, are appalling.

It's existence is well known and has been since the movement of the others from Tipperary.

If you ever do get round to writing "the book" you could make Raymond Hoser look like Enid Blyton.;)
