pygmy hippo shot dead in australia...

How did a pygmy hippo avoid all of the crocs in the Northern Territory for the past 5 years? What an incredible story....

What a waste of valuable genetic material.....

Sometimes there are just no words to describe how stupid and cruel some people can be, why on earth would they do this......

I think it's a fair enough mistake to make. If I was in that situation I wouldn't be thinking "wait a second what if this isn't a pig...What if it's a pygmy hippo in the wild 200KM south of Darwin."

It is sad though because this female could have been sent to Sydney.

And what kind of pigs are these brave people hunting?

Bloody destructive feral pigs that shouldn't be in this country.

And "brave" is the right word. Not too many people from Birmingham would be prepared to battle the heat, the mossies, the Joe Blakes, the vegetation etc in an effort to reduce the number of these feral pests.

Don't get sarcy about the hunter - he is the only good guy in this whole sorry mess.

I only asked so I can understand.
So they are just 'domestic' pigs that have gone wild?
What exactly are they doing that they need to be killed?

feral pigs have a massive negative impact on the environment in australia. they are hunted for good reason.

The kind that are massive, causing incredible damage and rip dogs guts out!

No blame should be placed on this hunter. This hippo has been mentioned on this forum before.

This is what one looks like.
It was shot in June in the Northern Territory. One of twenty shot in a three day hunting trip.

Wild pigs do an enourmas amount of damage to the wetands of the the Northern Parts of Australia. They are extremely dangerous as well and any one who hunts them deserve the respect because it is hard and dangerous. I'm not keen on hunting but this is definatly something that needs to be done.

This is a link that describes the damage they do.

Thanks Jay, I now understand the problem, I too don't like the idea of hunting, but until I saw this link I had no idea of the scale of the problem (being from Birmingham, and not wanting to get used to the heat;)). I was upset because first of all there was the shot hippo which was a real shame, then I thought it's just a bunch of hunters who kill animals for fun, and that annoyed me. I'd not long seen a film about hunters shooting black bears in the US (and that was from what I could tell just for fun:mad:).

I think my next question should be how did the problem get so out of hand?

does anyone know the ancestry of the dead hippo? was it related to the pair lucky enough to be moved to CWSR?
