Pygmy hippos in captivity

Does the studbook list Kobe Animal Kingdom or NIFREL from Japan?
NIFREL (what institution?).

2012 - Japan data
Ishikawa held 0.1 (arrival from Overloon in 2012)
Nagoya held 0.2 (both females born and bred at Tokyo Ueno)
Tokyo Ueno 1.3 (only breeding pair St LouisxNagoya + offspring)
Wakayama (Nishimuro) held 0.1 (born Tokyo Ueno)

Nifrel is an aquarium near Osaka that keep most of their animals in insufficient enclosures. It was established around 2016 so it wouldn’t be in 2012 data yet. They somehow got a breeding pair and had a male calf named Tamtam born last year who was transferred to Kobe a couple months ago.

Edit: Nifrel’s male MotoMoto came from Buin Chile. Female FulFul/FuruFuru came from Singapore .

Ishikawa got a female pygmy hippo from Singapore which later had a male named Mirai which was later moved to Nagoya while female Koume moved to Kobe. The same pair in Ishikawa had a late offspring last year.

Summarize:
Ishikawa received a male or female pygmy hippo from Singapore. Name of female????
Exchange for tanuki dogs?
(as per the 2012 studbook they held 0.2 born and bred in Tokyo ...) Or has no. 2 F Koyuri died?

Kobe Zoo pair is male born 2019 in NIFREL with F Koume?

The Ishikawa Female from Overloon is named Nozomi. The Ishikawa male From Singapore is named Hikaru. Hikaru and Nozomi had a calf named Mirai.

Mirai is Paired with Koyuri in Nagoya at the end of 2018. Koume moved out of Nagoya to Kobe.

1.0 Motomoto from Buin and 0.1 FulFul from Singapore we’re paired in Nifrel Osaka. They had a 1.0 calf named Tam Tam who got paired with Koume a few weeks ago in Kobe.

this may help. コビトカバのいる動物園は?コビトカバ飼育展示園館と各個体情報まとめ - アリエスコム(ARIEScom.jp)

It seems that JAZA - Japanese zoological association has taken up cooperative breeding of pygmy hippo quite seriously with all these moves and recent births (allthough I have not studied the recent history of the Tokyo Ueno group yet)!

Current (???) standings: 5.8
Ishikawa: 1.1 - breeding pair
Kobe Oji: 1.1 - potential breeding pair
Nishimuro - Wakayama: 0.1 - unpaired individual
Nagoya - Higashiyama: 1.1 - potential breeding pair
Osaka NIFREL Aquarium: 1.1 - breeding pair
Tokyo Ueno: 1.3 - breeding pair + offspring

Some history on the Singapore born female at NIFREL - Osaka. She was the last born (unnamed in the 2012 studbook) - b. 17/12/2012 to original breeding pair Bubu X Minah.
Source: Security Check Required

Birth of calf Mirai was on February 21, 2019.

The Ishikawa female imported from Overloon was originally named "Asabi" (according to the 2012 studbook). Unless she passed away suddenly and another from the same facility was imported (highly doubt that ...). Have not yet found any evidence of a further Overloon export to Japan from there.

For the Ishikawa - Buin Zoo male it would be interesting to know his history (birth date et cetera).

South America
@OC, Affirmative, pygmy hippos are kept at the Buin Zoo - Chile. Breeding pair and with M offspring (as per 2012 studbook). Male Hippolito was born at Thule Zoo in Germany and the female Ndoki was born at Singapore (same parentage as NIFREL-Osaka F from Singapore).

BTW: till date (2012 studbook) Zoo Municipal Buenos Aires also maintained a pygmy hippo pair: Male Ivory from Singapore Zoo (born 1997 different parents to other Singapore born individuals mentioned above), arrived in 2000) and female Frida born 1988 in Leipzig Zoo, Germany.

Further to the above: I would like to inform all that Singapore Zoo and Taipeh Zoo, Taiwan have been accepted as EEP participants in the EEP pygmy hippo management.

In 2012 (studbook data):
Singapore Zoo held 3.3 individuals.
This includes both a Praha Zoo b.1990 (arrived 1993 and part of the 2012 current breeding pair) and a female imported ex Wroclaw Zoo b. 2009 and arrived in November 2011. So, SZ / WRS have a long history of cooperation already with European zoos.

If I am correct both offspring born 2010 (male Ahad) and the female born 2012 (unnamed - NIFREL female) were exported to Japanese zoos. See for further references also the above.

Taipeh Zoo held 3.7 individuals.
All individuals born and bred in Taipeh Zoo and it seems they have cooperative management with the Chinshang Farm (0.3 offspring signalled as "owned" by Chinshang Farm).

Chinshang Farm had 0.4 individuals of their own at the time.

Can any forumster update on the current groups at both institutions, f.i. recent breeding successes since 2012 and transfers and acquisitions or other news?

Thanks for the info Kifaru ! Very interesting stuff !

I had no idea that the species was kept by so many zoos in the region.

So to clarify, there are still pygmy hippos being kept at Buenos Aires Zoo ?

I know the zoo is going through quite a steep transition period so I imagine that if this pair are still there that they will eventually be moved elsewhere anyway.

I am afraid that question is beyond me. Whereas I have followed the zoo in the past - it was undeniably a municipal zoo with strong conservation links and good management - and visited it once when travelling on an Argentina/Chile paramo, altiplano, Patagonia and southern tip of South America tour. I was pleasantly surprised at the time with the overall look of the zoo with a strong focus on South American species and conservation. The zoo had a nice feel with listed buildings too! Unfortunately, local activist politics and lack of municipal support for the resident zoo completely screwed it up. Not sure, if the former zoo management force is still there.

I might check how and where with pygmy hippo at BAZ sooner or later. I know their African elephants would be moved off to a S-A-N-C-T-U-A-R-Y (now you know what my qualification for this type of activist establishment is, I am afraid it lacks the zoo and husbandry capacity to do things properly - as also evidenced how political parties and BZ Municipality have screwed up things at BAZ).

I dont know the Buenos Aires zoo so can't comment other than saying that any loss of such an institution to "animal rights" activists is a huge one and one that needs to be taken very seriously indeed.

I'm really cynical about these "sanctuaries" and their supposed "interest" / "credentials" in conservation too.

Considering that pygmy hippos are an endangered species I certainly hope that these animals don't get carted off to one. That would be really quite a loss in my opinion.

I found this blog post examining the pygmy hippos in Japan.

海外から来たコビトカバの血縁関係(追記あり) - リサーチマニアのメモ帳

Motomoto from Buin is born in July 9 2013 despite NIFREL previously saying that he was born in June 2. Nifrel did correct that mistake and refer his birthday as July 9.

the blog author does show bring up closeness according to google translate.

For now, 7 in Taipei include a male calf born last year;1,1,1 in Shoushan; 0,1 in both Wanpi and Chinshang.

Yes, there are now 3 animals in Shoushan, parents and a calf born last year.
Thanks for your comments.

KAOHSIUNG - Shoushan Zoo
I figured that the Shoushan Zoo breeding pair originated from Taipeh Zoo offspring. Any idea which ones were loaned out and when?

I found references to renovation of Shoushan Zoo for 2016 and a set of to be loaned out animal species, including a male white rhino bred at Taipeh.

CHINSHANG - Farm Resort
If 0.1 pygmy hippo currently kept, this means that the other 3 FF have passed away or been transferred out? What kind of facility is this?
What individual(s) might have left?

WANPI
A small zoo? New loan from Taipeh or Chinshang?

BAZ held a pair in 2012, of which the male Ivory was a breeding loan from Singapore Zoo. I assume that if and when they would be scuttered off BAZ Singapore Zoo would have to have a big say if, how and where to? If the municipal authorities would have any genuine welfare concerns they would not transfer out the old 1988 born female Frida (probably still legally owned by Leipzig Zoo ..., would you believe!).

Thanks for your comments.

Pygmy hippo(侏儒河馬)
The adult female in Shoushan Zoo (壽山動物園) is called Chūnyuán (春圓), which is from CHINSHANG, and the male "Qiūjí(秋吉)" is from Taipei. As I can remember, the transfer happened in 2016.
For the CHINSHANG(池上牧場) part, it is a leisure farm that cooperates with Taipei but might not last for too long, and I think the not mentioned one is dead.

WANPI(頑皮世界) is a medium-sized private zoo located in Tainan, the animal there is Xiǎoxūn(小薰) from Taipei which arrived in 2018.

If you want to search for more information, I've add some Chinese translation in ().

Thanks for that. The information was most helpful. I can tie both a Taipei and Chinshang Pastoral Farm Resort born individual as you mentioned to individual animals in the 2012 studbook. Chunyuan was born 7/6/2010 in Chinshang PFR and Xiaoxun was born 31/1/2012 in Taipei.

TAIPEI - Zoo:
Should have 1.2 breeding animals, all born and bred in Taipei: M Hsia Chieh ( b. Feb. 1990) and FF Jiao Hsiao (b. Dec. 1979) and Jou Chou (b. Nov. 1979). If current breeding animals are not these than there would have been a change of the guard (generational switch). All Taipei founders originated from US zoo imports in 1986 from Brownsville, St. Louis and Baton Rouge.

Apart from the above-mentioned breeding animals the following offspring are mentioned: Shiao Jie (M, b. 12/2007), Siao Jhu (F, b. 9/2010) and Jiao Qius So (F, b. 12/2012).

It would be interesting to know how many offspring were born since 2012 and up till 2018. We know the 2019 birth was a male

CHINSHANG - Farm Resort:
Taipei Zoo sent out one pair (1.1) in May 2003 here. The original Brownsville imported male (Adam) and female Wa Chuan (born April 1993 in Taipei). They had 0.3 offspring (Chun Chi, Chun Shi and said Chun Yuan). Adam died in February 2011 in Chinshang PFR.

Outstanding issues:
* I could not link up Qiuji with any of the 2012 studbook listed pygmy hippo for Taipei.
* It might be that the breeding female Wa Chuan is the only animal remaining at Chinshang PRF, the other 0.2 offspring being sent elsewhere or exported or passed on.
* If some of these names do not ring a bell with you, it is probably the "bad skills" transliteration from Chinese in the studbook.

I believe Qiuji was born by Jiao Qius (in Taipei, the first word in the name of newborns is the last word in their mom, so 嬌秋>秋吉) in 12/22/2012 since it called "Dragon baby (born in dragon year of Chinese zodiac)" by the news published by Taipei as I can remember. The calf called Qiuxiang born last year is also from Jiao Qius.
Also, Siao Jhu have a male calf Jhuchang in 12/15/2015
