Pygmy hippos in captivity

Information is scant but at one time, the Mountain View Conservation & Breeding Centre held a handful of pygmy hippos. They received a female (named "Abou") from the Toronto Zoo in 1994, and a male (named "Harvey") from Whipsnade Zoo two years later in 1996. The centre's now-defunct website claims the pair produced 3 calves while at Mountain View, and that they were housed alongside a pair of bongos.

Mountain View remains one of only two facility in Canada to ever house the species, alongside the aforementioned Toronto Zoo.

Both individuals were transferred/received by Metro Toronto Zoo in December 2006.

Hippos are quite popular in Indonesian zoos, almost all zoos even have both Nile and pygmy hippopotamus. In the case of the latter, the species has been long maintained in Indonesia.

Sinka Zoo - Single female
Ragunan Zoo - Two pair
Taman Safari Bogor - Breeding group of 8-10
Bandung Zoo - Single male
Lembang Park & Zoo - Single individual
Solo Safari - Single male
Gembira Loka Zoo - Single individual on-display
Surabaya Zoo - 6 hippos (2018)
Taman Safari Prigen - 4 hippos (2014)
Batu Secret Zoo - Unspecified numbers
Bali Safari & Marine Park - 3 hippos
Lombok Wildlife Park - Single pair
Lembang Park, Gembira Loka, Batu Secret and Lombok Wildlife are new to me.

I can probably give you all the details about the singletons at Bandung, Sinka and Solo Safari. For a fair bit same is true for Ragunan, Surabaya and TS Prigen (it seems here + 1 individual since my data set was last updated) and the Bali Safari (original breeding pair is from TSI Bogor actually). TSI Bogor really is a challenge ..., as they had quite a few elderly pygmy hippos that I expect to perhaps have passed away since around 2014.

I think I recall that the single hippos at Bandung and Sinkawang came from Surabaya. I wouldn't be suprised if that's the case for Agus the pygmy hippo at Solo Safari as well, he's already there even before the revitalization and rebranding from Jurug Solo Zoo. It's not suprising with the origin of Bali Safari's hippo, a lot of the animals at Prigen and Bali originated from Cisarua or atleast first arrived and habituated there.
